Default Does anyone own an Orion Deluxe Mini 50mm Guide Scope with Helical Focuser?

I am interested in purchasing a 50mm guide scope, but do not know which to order.

I know Orion's mini 50mm guide scope will work with my refractor. I can pull it out of the mounting bracket and place it in the 50mm finder scope rings on my Explore Scientific 80ED.

However, I do not know if your deluxe mini 50mm guide scope with helical focus will work. It seems like a much better scope, but in the pictures it looks enlarged at both ends. I do not know if it will come out of the mounting bracket. I know it will not come out of from the front end. I have an Orion 50mm finder scope on my 10" Dob. It has the same body and the same mounting bracket. It must be removed by slipping the bracket from the back side of the finder scope. But the helical focuser on the back end also looks larger than the bracket. Can the helical focuser be removed long enough to change mounts or is it mounted in such a way that removing it would damage it?

I thought there would be a good chance that someone on here has one of those.

That question was one reason I went with this:

    I've been happy with it.

Thank you. I was unaware of that guide scope.

Just as a side note, while the helical focuser does make the job easier...
It's a job that really only has to be done once, or once in a very great while.
It's not like you'll be switching out EP's and changing focus.

Once the guide camera is set up, it shouldn't need focus adjustment.
I honestly can't remember the last time I touched the focus on my OAG setup.

Just in case you have something else you want to spend the extra cash on...

A OAG can be a real chore to get the focus point setup. Be ready to do a lot of head scratching figuring out spacing and which if any spacing rings will be required. Also finding the point to place the pick off prism, not to far in to cast a shadow, not too far out to where your guide stars are few and distorted. Of course every time you move the prism the spacing and focus changes. It's a little like herding cats.

But as mentioned once done it rarely changes unless you change ota's or spacing for some reason. Then the chore has to be repeated.

With the separate guide scope focusing is quick and easy especially one with the helical focuser. No real worries about spacing and setup.

I have used both methods and found that the separate guide scope is a hell of a lot easier to set up, but the OAG gives better performance.

There is always a trade off.

i own the 60mm version, and while the focuser was a bit crunchy when it arrived, it's turned into my travel scope. it's got pretty bad CA on planets, but otherwise it's great. i saw my first globular clusters through it.

i'm pretty sure the same manufacturer makes these, and i've been really happy with this one too. (astromania doesn't brand the raci, or else i'd probably have gone with them.. their customer service was excellent over a problem with the packaging on the first 60mm...)

Another reason I chose the Astromania 50mm was that the field of view with an ASI120MC more closely matched the recommendation form SharpCap to perform their camera assisted Polar Alignment.
