I used my TV 2x Barlow often with a 15mm Plossl on my 102mm Mak. Mainly for lunar viewing though. Eventually I switched to a short Barlow.

Magnifications of 170x or so are achievable on the Moon with a 4" Mak.

Shorty that's good to know. Thanks for mentioning it again. I maybe just have to get better eyepieces than the ones I have. I'm looking at a few.

I 'can' use the 8.5mm with the 90* diagonal in the daytime, but the image doesn't fill the eyepiece. Not yet sure about using the 8.5 with the 45* erecting prisim.

I agree with Ozman though. Since my main interest is in birding and a wide field of view, I kind of jumped the gun on the Barlow. My first purchases should probably have been an eyepiece or a zoom. With an eyepiece and a Barlow, the FOV will be much less. But, if the Barlow works well with my scope and whatever eyepieces, I do believe it was a fairly good deal for a Tele Vue. Perhaps worth jumping on anyway. And like JG intimated, I can't go wrong with a TV.

I'm still have the same problem that I've noticed other beginners have. That being, what size combination of eyepieces would best fit my uses and work well with my scope. Like trying to decide between a 12mm and a 15mm. Perhaps I purchase a 15mm but later find that a 12mm will work better for my uses and, I also later find that a 17mm would be a good eyepiece for me. I would have a 15mm that is close to both of the other eyepieces but, not quite the best suited for my uses.

I like the X-Cell that Ozman pointed out. But, he also pointed out some less expensive eyepieces that might make a good interim while I figure out what sizes and AFOV best suit me. I might be able to find some used eyepieces at lower cost, and they can help me learn what sizes I actually want. Also, the zooms that I saw had markings around the barrel to show what focal length it was set at. If accurate, that could be an aid in helping to determine what combination of eyepieces one might want.

Buying, selling, and trading gear is half the fun.

Or not selling - 20 years ago I bought a 7mm EP for a Meade SCT I had then. I was ignorant - it was way too much magnification for that scope. I took a many-year break from astronomy for many reasons, but I kept my gear. Now, that TeleVue is a great high power EP for close-up views of the Sun in my new (used) PST solar scope.

I recommend not being to hasty to resell gear unless you really need the money. Your new scope is probably a keeper, but may not be your only scope. The good times are just beginning!

Well, you've still got a nice Barlow when you need one. A Barlow combined with a larger EP, or something like a 15mm Plossl, enables you to use an eyepiece with a larger field stop, eye lens and field lens yet at an increased magnification. Last night I viewed Jupiter and Saturn with my ST80 at 166.6x. Both showed a tremendous amount of detail. I utilised a 6mm Plossl with a 2.5x Barlow. Effectively making the Plossl 2.4mm. I doubt a regular 2.4mm Plossl, even if they made them, would have been easy to use. My limit is about a 4mm ortho' lol.
