Default SkyPortal and SkySafari 5 Plus

    Hi Everyone,

Anyone have any guidance setting SkySafari 5 Plus with Celestron's SkyPortal? Is it possible?
I only had the scope out for a very short time using the SkyPortal wifi with the SkyPortal app on my iPad and I am very pleased with its performance. The slewing buttons seem very coarse, but otherwise I'm very happy with the wifi. Seems like I can use the hand controller for more precise slewing adjustments.
My question is I also have the SkySafari 5 Plus app and I haven't had any luck wirelessly connecting the two. My scope is a Nexstar 130 slt. I can't seem to find much info on the web concerning the connection settings with SkyPortal. If anyone can let me know if they have had success with SkyPortal and SkySafari 5 Plus even that they can work together. I am thankful for any response.

    Jim

    Hey all,
I finally figured it out. I had selected my scope (Nexstar 130 slt) in the scope setup and it needed to be Celestron wifi. Cooking with gas now!

I did get a fairly decent night (this past Friday) to try out the SkyPortal wifi. I hadn't yet discovered how to connect to the Celestron SkyPortal wifi with SkySafari 5 Plus so I used the SkyPortal app on my iPad.
I had a great time! The scope aligned well and went right on target every time or close enough to put the objects within the field of view using a 12mm eyepiece (54x). Went open cluster hunting and bagged several with a couple of bonus views.

    M42 - Orion Nebula. Beautiful! at 54X.
*Mintaka - sharp double star. great separation. at 54X. *M41 - Cool. great sharp view at 54x (12mm).
    *M47 - Nice, bright cluster at 20X (32mm).
    *M50 - Dim, but defined cluster (20X).
    *M48 - Same as M50.
    *M44 - Beehive Cluster, bright wide field view (20X) 32mm. *M93 - Fine, tight cluster, mag 6.19. at 54x.
*NGC 2362 - Nice, tight, bright cluster at 54x.
*NGC 2360 - Mag 7.19, very dim but defined at 130x.
    *M37 - Beautiful cluster at 54x.
    *M36 - Pinwheel cluster, mag 6.0.
*M38 - Starfish Cluster, very nice and somewhat bright. Cool shape. mag 6.4. 54X.
*M35 - Beehive cluster, very bright, bigger field than view at 54X.

I have to say that I really enjoyed the SkyPortal. Later that night I connected the scope with SkySafari and tried it out the next morning on Jupiter and Saturn. The wind was really up and I have seen much better views, but the SkyPortal and SkySafari worked perfectly.
I must admit though, I do like the audio clip describing the target information in the SkyPortal app. It's really cool.
Can't beat the convenience of wifi control for $87!

I have the SkyPortal and the WIFI is coming tomorrow for my two telescopes, a Nexstar 8 SE and an AVX carrying an Astro-Tech AT115EDT. Once I get everything I plan on testing on the first semi clear night I get. Thank you for describing how it went for you.

Thanks so much for this simple fix. I've been trying to get sky safari plus to control my celestron 8se using celestron's wifi adapter with no luck until I read your post. Can't wait to use it in the backyard.
