Default Altair Lightwave 0.6x Reducer - Initial Report

I started a thead the other day asking about back focus on a Canon DSLR whilst looking for a suitable Focal Reducer

    Canon EOS T3i / 600D Back focus

    Well, it arrived today!

Altair Lightwave 0.6x Reducer - Rother Valley Optics Ltd

I'll be honest here - I went for this one due to the price! Others are £$$ in price with this one being only £75 (about $90) its a bit of a gamble.

Came in a strudy box wrapped in a bag with one of those moisture absorbant bag things in it. Lens caps on both ends. Not much else to say about the item in general!

Attached with ease to the T-Ring, slotted nicely into the focuser and held nice and secure by the 3 retaining thumb screws. Fired up BYEOS and it came into focus very easily. Here are a couple of shots showing with and without the FR in place:

Cant really deduce if its any good at this point other than it does what it says. Proof will be when i eventually get a clear night! I will of course report back when that opportunity arises!

Big thanks to my neighbours garage numbers... They are proving very useful for tesing and tinkering around with my telescope!!

Just got the 0.8, but it looks like it will be a long time before I can test it.
Will let you know when I do.

Well, finally managed to try out the focal reducer. All looked ok to start with.. However, after a quick stretch in PS it revealed some significant vignetting.

From my reading and research, Flats should be able to cure lots of the vignetting. Tried that, but saw no significant reduction in the vignetting. I am not totally convinced my flats are the best. Here's one of them:

    FR_In_Full.JPG

The flat was taken with the FR in place. I expected to see some more vignetting which would hopefully compensate.

One suggestion that was made was to put an extension tube on the front of the FR which in turn goes into the focuser receptor. I did try moving the FR out a bit and it appeared to have some improvement. I cant be sure until i can test with extensions. The distance from CCD to FR should be spot on at 55MM which is the required distance for the FR.

Any comments from the audience here on how to reduce the vignetting, or if the extensions would make a difference.
