Things get really picked over at ours so you need to make certain everything that supposed to be in there is. Hopefully all their stores aren't quite like that!
My experience is similar Alan. You really have to look those over good or you'll get one home, pop it open, and find no pluck foam, or a big dent shows up that you didn't see in the store.

Its probably because its the haven for all those bargain hunters who want cheap tools and such, so things get tossed here and there. I do have to wonder sometimes if some of that foam gets shoplifted by people needing a new section for their toolbox because they changed their configuration!

Yeah. And HF doesn't sell replacement foam that I'm aware of, and the price from other sources equals the price of the whole HF case. I finally discovered the HF "fatigue mats" for in front of your workbench. They're about $8 for a set and you can laminate the layers together to create your own insert.

Went to the HF store, they had the cases, but not one of them had any foam in them. I asked the clerk about cases with foam and was told they don't have them, and to try HF on line.

I made my first ever trip to Harbor Freight last night. I bought one of the black cases. Of the ones they had there that weren't still wrapped in plastic, only one contained both the top and bottom pieces of foam. I grabbed the foam from it and put it into the case which had the least scratches. I've heard of people opening the wrapped ones and still finding foam missing, so I didn't want to take a chance on a wrapped case.

Now that's just ridiculous that they wouldn't carry them as well as they sell (and not just to astronomers either). Our store always has plenty of these: 18 in. x 6 in. x 13 in. Black Aluminum Case

with the inserts, but as I said, sometimes its only a partial or the case is beat up, so one has to pick and choose both the case and foam to get the best of the lot. I cannot understand why one particular store wouldn't carry them on the shelf. They come with a tool pocket in the top, but I put a piece of eggshell foam over top of that as I didn't need the pockets and wanted foam on top as well to hold things in place better.

That is truly a shame because they often have them on sale and they also send out coupons regularly for 20% or 30% off of one item, which is a good way to get the price even lower. I know they do have some different varieties of cases, some without foam. Seems like your local store may only stock those for some odd reason. Very sorry that didn't work out for you.

Lowe's used to sell the same cases under a different name (kinda like various brand names on the same eyepieces from an OEM in China), buy they stopped carrying them. Many used to get them there until they dropped the product.

I bought mine online from the HF site - there wasn't an HF store locally, until today - literally - it's grand opening is today.

There was a minor dent in it, but all of the foam was there, so I called it a win, and am using it - by using I mean my EP's are stored in it, and I haven't had a chance to transport to the telescope yet.

Good idea Tom. HF is a good place for some things, but you really gotta check them over before walking out.

I use the top eggshell foam, but also keep the top tool insert underneath it. Between the case and the insert, I stash my PSA and star charts. In the tool insert itself, I store a couple of Lens Pens, my eye patch, a small phillips screwdriver (for collimating the secondary, if needed), green laser pointer, and a few other odds and ends.

A small dent I can live with, because I know I'm more than likely gonna scuff and dent it myself. But you do want the foam, so yeah you got a winner Brett. Congrats on the new store by the way.
