    Default upgrade focuser Celestron 130slt

I'm looking at the Orion Crayford focuser for my reflector telescope. It doesn't look like it is a drop in replacement, some modification would be needed. I was wondering if anyone could confirm this. Thanks

I guess since no one has replied it is not worth upgrading since it was an inexpensive telescope. I'll just use it as is, I tried taking the focuser apart, cleaned it and put gun grease on the track. Someone shared a link to doing that.

I upgraded the focuser on my C6-N from the 1.25" single speed to a GSO 2" dual speed focuser and it made a big difference in the performance. The scope is worth about $200 and the focuser cost me $100, but I think it was worth it.

The 130SLT focuser hole diameter is approx. 2 5/8" measured along the optical axis. The mounting screw holes are approx. 2 3/8" apart along the optical axis and approx. 2.9" perpendicular to the optical axis (as measured with a tape measure along the curve of the tube). The Orion Crayford focuser (Product Support - Orion 2" Crayford-Style Telescope Focuser) is a low cost way to obtain a better focuser but requires enlarging the focuser hole in the tube from 2 5/8" to 3.65" (see product manual at link above) and probably drilling new mounting holes for the screws.

GSO makes some nice 2" focusers for a decent price: Focusers & Accessories - Parts & Accessories | AgenaAstro.com
For your scope you would need to order the type 0 baseplate and probably elongate the mounting holes in your scope along the optical axis but you would not have to enlarge the opening for the focuser:

Type 0: Base Plate for 6" Telescopes - GSO

    - Base plate curve diameter: 6.93" (176mm)
    - Base plate dimensions: 3.54" x 3.54" (90mm x 90mm)
    - Hole Spacing (center-to-center along telescope tube/optical axis): 70mm (2.76")
    - Hole Spacing (center-to-center perpendicular to telescope tube; straight line measurement): 73mm (2.87")
    - Hole Spacing (center-to-center perpendicular to telescope tube; measured along curve of base plate): 74mm (2.91")

In order to gain enough inward focus to achieve prime focus, you would have to spend more and purchase something like this: Antares 2" Low Profile Crayford Focuser for Reflectors - Dual Speed with 11:1 MicroFocuser

Wonder if there are motorized focusing options to be had?

Great info above- It's not the expensiveness/inexpensiveness of the OTA per se- It's getting it to do what you want it to do the way you want it done... If the 130SLT provides you a good AP experience at a low cost- then trick it out and make it dance your flavor of dance! I love seeing ingenuity and making things fit that were not originally made for particular products... Good news is if you completely obliterate the OTA, it can be replaced cheaply (plus you'll have spare parts hehe)... But seriously, these men & women are some of the most ingenius people I've ever 'seen' when it comes to making things work and maximizing bang for buck! Good luck~

I signed up just to be able to read this post (I ran out of "free" reads)... I just ordered the GSO dual-speed w/linear bearing from Agena. I went ahead and spent the extra $, I wanted dual speed, and figured I might as well do the linear bearing and I hopefully can move it up to my next 'scope.
