Default Can't see constellation etchings inside CGEM polar scope

When I target Polaris with the polar scope the image is so dim I can't see the constellation etchings inside it. Therefore, I can't orient the Big Dipper and Cassiopeia relative to each other. Is there a trick to illuminate the front of the scope? I tried shinning an LED light on the front and that didn't work.

You have to shine a red light into the front of the polar scope at an angle. This will take some trial and error, but you will find the right positioning of the light to make things work.

You can stop using the constellations and use the circle that you place Polaris on like a clock. First find Kochab naked eye and determine what hour on the clockface it is, then place Polaris on the same position on the circle in the polar scope. I use this method for fairly accurate alignment and fine tune when needed.

I wonder....Is there an illuminated polar scope on the market?

I made one of these for only a few bucks and it works very well. I don't use it any more, because it don't use a polar scope any more. In fact I sold all of my polar scopes.

When I set up my scope I refer to PolarFinder.
It's an online download and I use it for every polar alignment I do.
And It's always nice to doublecheck that my polar scope alignment is still right on.

That is a cool idea. I recall seeing another DIY polar scope illuminator that went inside the mount housing and hardwired an LED. Very nicely done, not complicated but obviously more involved. I'll have to search around to find it again.

Your response leads to the question if your not using polar scopes anymore, what is your solution to easy polar allignments?

I have Celestron mounts, CG-5's and CGEM's, and I use "All Star Polar Alignment" (ASPA) in the hand controller. I set up my mount using a compass to get close to the NCP and do a 2 + 4 star alignment, followed with an ASPA that only takes 20 seconds to perform and it works well enough for me in most cases. If I want anything more precise I'll do a quick drift alignment.

Default Re: Can't see constellation etchings inside CGEM polar scope

I've tried a number of different methods including two versions of the All Star Polar Alignment. In one instance I did the full on polar scope alignment first which requires some alt/azi manual adjustments. I then transitioned into the 2+3 or 4 star alignment, it wasn't seemless due to some confusing commands between the instructions and what was on the controller display. But where I think things got messed up was in the last step that instructed you to make manual adjustments in alt/azi. The chosen star was in the west and positioned such that I could not do latitude adjustments without the mount wanting to only move lateral, I could not get the mount to move up and down. Further, I wondered if making these final adjustments knocked the previous polar scope adjustments out of whack?

At this point I'll go back to basics and begin with a rough visual polar alignment and then go straight into the All Star Polar Alignment procedure. I spent quite a bit of time on aligning the polar scope itself to the mount axis and now have it orientated where the Big Dipper is in it's proper position right off the bat. I wonder if it would do me any good to position Polaris in the small circle and then move on to the ASPA?

I would like to ultimately achieve a more precise polar alignment than what the CGEM instructions provide. The instructions kind of leaves you with the impression upon successful completion of their alignment procedure you can expect good results visually and OK results for astro imaging. I think by you doing a quick drift alignment just might be what is needed, but now the process is even more of a hassle because the last time I was out it took me a couple hours of preparation and before you knew it there wasn't much imaging time left, especially with daylight savings. I can really appreciate the observatory guys, man, I wish I had a backyard big enough. As it is now with the yard being so small and the neighbor planting fast growing trees right on the fence, it won't be long before my view will be non existent. I'm already convinced if home prices ever get back to a reasonable level, I'll be looking for a better location.
