Thumbs up How to replace a power tank battery

My Celestron 7AH power tank, after a couple of years of abuse, finally started losing it's charge. I've been quite happy with the size of the unit and its performance, so I decided to just replace the battery. I shopped around and picked up a 9AH battery to increase the usage time a bit and installed it today.

Here's a step by step in case you ever have to do it.

Here are the last two images:

    7_01.JPG

I purchased the 9AH battery from AttBatt.com for $26, it's charging up nicely now in anticipation of the next clear night. If it lasts as long as the original, it only costs about $10 a year to power the mount and some accessories, such a deal....

    Clear skies,

Nice work Paul. I do that with my computer UPS's. I finally took two of those batteries paralleled and put the in a mini-cooler with a power outlet and use that for my scope.

Sounds nice and simple Bill...do you have a picture of that configuration? I'll bet lots of users would find that helpful.

Nice work Paul. I too do that with UPSs. In our office, everyone has a UPS. We spend around $70-$90 on them new, but only $16 a piece to change the batteries. Beats the hell out of buying new ones!

I have the 7AH Powertank also. You can bet I will be following your lead when my battery starts to die.

my 17AH Celestron Powertank, 3.5 years old, would not charge with the provided wall adapter.
i always left it in the Obs, winter, summer, etc and did not religiously maintain it.
a few days ago, i hooked it up via the battery cables to a trickle charger (2Amp) while it was in the "ON" position and have been using it (front light, red light, radio and connected to Nexstar 130SLT) for three days now with no issues so far!
    just an FYI

That's a heck of a lot cheaper than buying a new one.

Be careful. 2 amps is too high a charging rate for a SLA AGM battery. You want to charge at about half that rate.

Thanks for the great info, folks. Let's put this one to rest to avoid a runaway dead-thread revival situation.

New threads on the topic are most welcome.
