I did some more research on this issue and found this info from another source:

"But, I've used Orion filters in the past and have always had threading issues with their 2" filters on anything but Orion eyepieces. It was especially bad on my then 31T5. The thread pitch is the same but Orion's supplier cuts their filter threads to a shallower depth between major and minor diameter, which restricts threading. OTOH, Orion eyepieces will usually accept others filters without trouble though, since there isn't the resistance from a deeper thread shoulder to keep them from threading."

The above pretty much tracks with my experiences. My Orion and Baader filters all fits the Orion adapter, so in my case I am good (however, they don't always fit other adapters I have). My understanding is that Lumicon filters do have not have threading issues, or at least none that I've heard of. It certainly is a source of frustration though that simple things like thread pitch or depth, and even screws used in scopes just can't be standardized to the point where everything fits with everything else.

Couldn't one attach the 2" filter to the telescope end of the 2" diagonal, then use whichever eyepiece you like?
I do this with my variable polarizing filter set. One half on the diagonal and the other on the eyepiece, then rotate the EP to vary the polarization.

Yes you can certainly do that if you are using a refractor with a 2 inch diagonal. Obviously wouldn't work for a newt. But again, it still comes down to if the filter will thread properly into the diagonal. When I had an ST120, I could thread my Orion filters into the GSO Crayford focuser usually, though at times they would want to hang up. This is a well known issue with the threading on Orion branded 2 inch filters when trying to use them with eyepieces, diagonals, adapaters, etc., that are not Orion labeled. There is the rub, if proper standardization were observed by the various manufacturers, we could mix and match without difficulty.
