Default Budget Barlow Shootout - GSO 2x Achromatic Barlow vs Orion Shorty Barlow!

GSO 1.25" 2x Achromatic Barlow Lens vs Orion Shorty 1.25" 2x Barlow Lens

    GSO 1.25" 2x Achromatic Barlow Lens # GS2BL

Orion Shorty 1.25" 2x Barlow Lens | Orion Telescopes: Barlows

The Shorty is 50 bucks and the GSO is 33. I wanna go with the GSO but someone convince me otherwise if its worth it for the shorty. I have a 10 inch reflector, f/4.7. If I'm lookin at the wrong barlows entirely, TELL ME!

PS I LOVE the fact you can unscrew the bottom of the barlow and attach to the eyepiece to give 1.5x. If you can't do it with the Shorty I'm going GSO all the way, but it appears you can do it with the shorty too.

Fill me in!! I love talking about astronomy and astro-gear, jeez

I just purchased one from High Point Scientific with their brand on it.

It was a 2" and $59 I believe, with ED optics.

These I have been told are the same as the GSOs, although I could be wrong.

The bottom of mine will screw off and it has the special bands that hold the eyepiece tight.

I have not got a chance to use it yet, but was told that the ED was one of its advantages.

"shorty" barlows have a stronger negative element and will show more chromatic aberration than a "normal" barlow. The "shorty" varieties are designed for telescopes that have a diagonal (SCTs, refractors) and thus a longer barlow would strike the mirror.

Both of the barlows you've selected are of the "short" variety, as far as I know. I also suspect that the optical quality in both will be identical; go for the one that costs less!
