i live in s. virginia and am interested in seeing the aurora. is there a
best time of nite to observe, like right before dawn. or can it be seen all
night. i guess what i'm asking is is the relationship between the sun's
    position and mine important?

    thanks,

    cheech

Start looking as soon as it gets dark enough and look periodically until
after midnight. Last night's show was over by about 8:00pm ET here in
Southern N.Y. but it was AWESOME. You'll know it when you see it! Look
northeast, north and northwest from a decently dark location. Light
pollution kills it like it kills everything else in the sky.
