Default Explorer Scientific AR127 and Daystar Quark etalon without ERF possible ?

Recently I was able to grab a second hand ES AR127 refractor and I want to buy a Daystar Quark chromosphere to observe the sun in H-alpha, but the ERF is very expensive adding too much to my budget for the Daystar Quark chromosphere. I read on several fora, that it is possible to only use a UV/IR cut filter directly attached to the star diagonal without the need of buying that expensive ERF. Can someone please confirm this is safe to use ? The reason is the immense price difference between an ERF and a 2" UV/IR cut filter.
