Default Lunt 50 , what am i doing wrong ?

    Hello,

After receiving my Lunt 50 1.5 months ago or so? I had two days now at last where there is stunningly clear weather(and i had time off) and so i decided to take out the Lunt and try it out.

I put in a 13 mm Nagler Type 5 , I know, maybe not an ideal EP (not sure) for it, but anyway, if the Lunt performs well, i will get more suitable ep for it , thinking of the Lunt zoom now.

What i see is a red disk, nothing more, no details, nothing. Although yesterday i thought i saw a very small prominence, but this might have been wishful thinking.

The disk has a very sharp edge, so focus seems spot on. But there it stops. I know solar activity is near an all time low atm, but i had expected to at least see some small proms or surface detail. Tuning does nothing.

So....can anybody help me ? Or should i send the scope back for inspection ?

    many greetings

    Inhapi.

Hello, I am also thinking of getting a Lunt 50 or Coronado PST. I was worried that I would not see that much detail. I think the photography and stacking and processing is needed to see clear detail. Am I wrong? Is your Lunt 50 a single or double stack. I know double stack is supposed to be better but I am not sure if I can justify spending thousands. Unless it was my "job" or something to do Solar research and imaging.

a Lunt 50 double stacked, which is what I started with should be about $1800, part of the problem right now is the sun is super quiet (Maunder quiet, not yet) and so you won't see much if anything on the surface, there are occasional proms on the limbs.

Are you adjusting the pressure tuner once you have things in focus? That should show different features.
Could just be that the sun is fairly quiet at the moment.
As for EP, I have a Hyperion zoom but also get good results from an old 10mm kellner.

Yes, i play with the tuner a lot, but see no difference. Anyway, I'll put it next to someone with years of expierience with a PST when our agenda's, solar and earthy conditions are good....to compare the views.

BTW it is a single stacked one.

not just adjust it but sometimes you have to unscrew it all the way take it off and put it back on (finicky to get the threads to start) to equalize the pressure
