    Default Earliest sunset tonight.

Today was the earliest sunset of the year, at 4:36 pm local standard time at my location. From now on, the evenings will start getting brighter.

The actual date varies a bit by latitude, being earlier at lower latitudes and later at higher latitudes. Today is the date for 45 degrees north. The earliest sunset does not occur on the solstice because of the equation of time. The time of local solar noon is changing rapidly over the next few weeks, affecting sunrise and sunset times. The latest sunrise will occur about January 5th.
