C90 with a 350D at prime focus and Thousand Oaks glass filter for photos. I am planning on taking photos at 1-minute intervals for the duration of the eclpise. I will be using a laptop as an intervalometer via DSUSB. It should make a fun time-lapse.

For myself, I have a pair of solar glasses from SkyNews. If I have anyone over for a bit of outreach, I am planning on doing mirror projection onto a sheet of white card.

I tested the whole setup today. I made myself a quick-and-dirty Hartmann mask, with a piece of cardboard and a swiss army knife, for focusing the C-90. I was surprised at how well it worked.

I was going to try to run two setups, but I'm thinking more and more that that will distract me from enjoying the event (if not clouded out --- not looking great -- If we could just move it to the 20th all would be wonderful -- anyone got enough pull??). So, currently I'm thinking I will take my D810 + 300mmf4 + 1.7x extender + solar filter and just use its built in intervalometer to reduce the number of things that can go wrong. Tentatively I'm thinking of 30 sec as the interval with a 3 or 5 exposure 1-stop bracket to avoid an after the fact &*^&^ I got the exposure wrong. The camera can do that all by its lonesome. Since I don't want to babysit the rig and the sun will move about one sun-diameter every two minutes putting it out of frame about every 6-8 minutes, I will bring my mount. (and a sturdy tripod in case all goes haywire) I will have no way to align the mount (can't be there the night before) so I'll just use compass and elevation and hope that that is good enough (anyone have experience with this?) During totality I'll switch to more frequent shots with a deeper bracket (9 @ 1-stop?). With the D810's native dynamic range that should give me a DR of at least 16 stops. I had not thought to use a mask to focus, but KathyNS's post has me thinking that would be a good idea. Alternatively if we have some sun spots (saw some yesterday) Live View at max zoom should work well.
