Default Am I crazy or smart? Skipped Observing, winds 20 gusts to 45 windchill -5 F

I went out and shoveled the snow off my observing platform and the sky is clear although a pale blue not a deep blue but in New England a milky blue is what we usually get.

I SO want to go out with the solar scope but the snow is blowing just like in the arctic and the scope and computer will get a dusting of snow on them. My Telegizmos cover is frozen on the EQ mount, with care I could take it off but it could crack.

The temp is currently up to 15 degrees F. windchill well below zero. I went out with hunting overalls over longjohns and jeans and the top was longjohns and a warm sweatshirt under an arctic jacket, a full facemask and warm gloves, I feel like the little kid on Christmas Story i can barely move, but I got the platform shoveled off
TOMORROW IS SUPPOSED TO BE WARM up to 24 degrees! and light winds so will get out there tomorrow

I hate to not observe but when I had my gloves off for a while my fingers started going numb.

I guess I am not a true astronomer, just a weanie afraid of sub-zero temps

I will observe in some pretty brutal conditions. Heated coat and socks, lots of layers, and using binoculars (less wind resistance) but I have my limits. Sometimes it's just not worth it no matter how strong the desire.

    I feel your pain... (literally...)
I'm fortunate in that, once I have everything set up, I can retreat to the sunroom for image monitoring...
Last night was a pretty good one, despite the ever-present Orb.
I got some Ha work in on a project. But yeah, going out for more than a few minutes at a clip was bone-numbing cold.
The wind did nothing to help, I might add...
It's 16° here now... Was 12° for most of the morning... But the wind has died a bit...
Bundling up and waiting till April is your only hope at this point!
Oh, and then there's the monster storm we're supposed to get on Tuesday....
    Jim

Yes, indeed! The forecast I heard this morning indicated that we are gonna get whopped with 12 to 20 inches up here in NH.

I apologize for purchasing my new telescope! It arrived damaged, and I've already started the return! Will that be enough to hold it off?

I can usually deal with the cold but once the wind starts to pick up speed then it is not even enjoyable.
I hope your forecast is better for you tomorrow.

You're not crazy, Ben, just smarter Wisdom=(age/temp outside+windchill factor). That's the ticket.... 7 years ago, I was out from just after midnight till 4 AM (Dec 21, 2010 lunar eclipse). It was -20C (-4F), cold with the wind, and I was out for the whole thing. Didn't faze me at all, really. Having a BBQ at 2AM helped. Now? Man, it drops below -10 and I won't even bother, unless there's a city-wide power failure. Amazing how 7 years has made such a difference in the way I can handle cold. I blame the grey hair; not as cold resistant Also, when I had my dob, nothing was more irritating than a gust of wind blowing snow down the tube!

Take heart, my friend, you are not alone and definitely not a weenie. I hope tonight is crystal clear for you, with no wind and temps in the 70's. Yeah, that last part probably won't happen for a bit yet, but soon enough...?

Better a weanie astronomer than an astronomer with no fingers. I can tolerate the cold, but like Jim, the wind can be a deal killer for me.

The sun will shine another day, but fingers and noses and toes don't grow back.

Went out today, it was a bit better, 18 degrees and 15-20 mph sustained winds with gusts to 30, wind chill up to 0F bundled up but still cold but I want to test the new cables for the Lunt LS80,
Problem is it is so cold all the cables are stiff just like solid wire. Also I don't know where my head was at but I spent an hour working with the laptop amd cameras and FORGOT to tune the scope, it was still set as if it were 30 degrees, I should have dialed the proms in.

    Well there is always tomorrow

The strong wind is your real problem. I don't blame anyone for not wanting to deal with wind. Observing in actual sub-zero temps is not a problem, if you know how to dress for it, but wind shakes the telescope and tends to freeze exposed flesh in low temps. Around here, if you are not willing to observe in the cold (clear nights are almost always cold, but very transparent) you won't be doing much observing during the winter months.
