Default First-ever picture of a black hole unveiled

Hi all. Here is the latest from the Event Horizon Telescope. More than 50 million light-years away, in the heart of a giant elliptical galaxy called Messier 87, a gargantuan beast is devouring anything that strays too near. Stars, planets, gas, and dust—not even light escapes the monster’s grasp once it crosses a threshold called the event horizon. You can see this amazing photo of the black hole, taken with a global collaboration of more than 200 scientists using an array of observatories scattered around the world, from Hawaii to the South Pole here, at:

Hi Eric. I didn't notice nFA's thread 40 minutes before I posted mine, and 30 minutes later refractordude didn't realize our threads before he posted his, so now we have 3 threads on this event. The moderators may merge the threads as they have sometimes done in the past. But, the intentions were well meant, and we have 3 different excellent links to the photograph, so they may just let it all stand.

Thank you, Marshall. These are indeed some very exciting developments, and a nice leap forward for astronomy. The Science Channel is showing a special tonight at 10:00 eastern time on this, and airing some previous black hole related programming prior to that.

As momentous as this event is, it cannot be contained in one thread only. Let them all stand!

What an amazing thing to see! As of right now, the image is the focus of Google's website. Pretty cool that they honored it!
