Default Ultima Thule Flyby - Jan 1!

In a little more than three days, New Horizons will be making its fast flyby of the Kuiper Belt object 2014MU69. This is the Johns Hopkins link to be checking out for all the up to date info: New Horizons: Beyond Pluto.

    - Close approach images, composition spectra and other kinds of data will start to flow from New Horizons on flyby day—Jan 1

    - Expect an image with almost 10,000 pixels on Ultima by that night, ready for release on Jan 2

    - By the first week of January expect even better images and a good idea of whether Ultima has satellites, rings or an atmosphere

    - Early next year, megapixel images will be sent, and if they contain the target – shooting at this resolution while speeding by at over 32,000 miles per hour is a stretch goal – they will reveal Ultima’s geology in exquisite detail

This is "almost" as exciting as the Pluto-Charon fly-by! Given the speculation about shape and/or number of objects, maybe even more exciting!!

I hope they have programmed in some good tracking on the cameras. The target will be moving at 1 degree every 4 seconds at closest approach Looking forward to a real time video of the encounter!
