Ultima Thule's shape revealed in latest image from NH: New Horizons: News Article?page=20181231.

"Just over 24 hours before its closest approach to Kuiper Belt object Ultima Thule, the New Horizons spacecraft has sent back the first images that begin to reveal Ultima's shape. The original images have a pixel size of 6 miles (10 kilometers), not much smaller than Ultima's estimated size of 20 miles (30 kilometers), so Ultima is only about 3 pixels across (left panel). However, image-sharpening techniques combining multiple images show that it is elongated, perhaps twice as long as it is wide (right panel). This shape roughly matches the outline of Ultima's shadow that was seen in observations of the object passing in front of a star made from Argentina in 2017 and Senegal in 2018."

I watched the "live countdown" as NH did its flyby at 12:33 a.m. Lots of excitement at NASA!! Looking forward to the first images that will be released at a news conference at 11:30 a.m. today.

I watched the live carrier and data acquisition. 6 hours after flyby New Horizons reported home, all systems are nominal.
It will take 20 months to transmit all the data captured from the flyby.

Latest image of UT with higher resolution images due within the next couple of days: New Horizons: News Article?page=20190101.

"At left is a composite of two images taken by New Horizons' high-resolution Long-Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI), which provides the best indication of Ultima Thule's size and shape so far. Preliminary measurements of this Kuiper Belt object suggest it is approximately 20 miles long by 10 miles wide (32 kilometers by 16 kilometers). An artist's impression at right illustrates one possible appearance of Ultima Thule, based on the actual image at left. The direction of Ultima's spin axis is indicated by the arrows."

Looks pretty much like they predicted as a result of the occultation observations.

The clearest images and first science results we have of #UltimaThule - the farthest object ever explored by spacecraft - from the @NASANewHorizons flyby. Don't miss the unveiling TODAY at 2pm ET. https://t.co/FjLvpgVx5V
