    Talking ISS Transits

I wasn't sure where to post these so I came here.

During the recent eclipse, a guy I follow on youtube went to Wyoming and not only caught the eclipse but the transit of the ISS across the sun during the run up to totality. I was astonished and decided I am going to try and do that as well.

Turns out there was a lunar transit AND a solar transit on two consecutive days right near my house this week. A friend and I drove about 10 miles out to an off ramp and onto a small frontage road at 12:40am on Monday to try and capture the transit. The skies had been cloudy and stormy all day the day before but as it neared 12am the sky to the east started to clear.
We set up and I brought a Galaxy tablet with a digital clock set to atomic time to get the timing right and took the video. We couldn't see anything through the LCD viewfinder so I had to wait until I got home to check the memory card and VIOLA, I got it. ...AND, a bonus satellite just a second or so later also transiting the moon at a 90° angle to the ISS path! WOW!

The following day, there was a solar transit that would happen right in the path that I drive to work. I only needed to leave 30mins earlier to try and catch it. Lots of clouds and the same monsoonal turbulence but the clouds opened with only 1 or 2 minutes to go and I caught it! Then the clouds coverd the sun up again and I continued my drive to work.

Anyway, I put together a couple of videos of the transits if you would like to see them. [apparently I can only embed 1 video so I just created links instead.]

    Solar Transit

You probably need to go full screen on both with a reasonably sized screen as the ISS is pretty small.

Both filmed with a Nikon P900 set to 1920X1080 60fps

Aha! An https thing. https doesn't always appreciate redirects.

    Try these direct links:
    Lunar: https://vimeo.com/233775864
    Solar: https://vimeo.com/233776144

(copy and paste the urls into a new tab/window)
