I think Henk raises a good point about the level of cosmic radiation. This causes degenerative cognitive impairment in addition to other bad impacts upon the human body. This may be a sticking point to any potential mission where astronauts can expect to be in space for more than a year to reach Mars. I think Elon Musk's goals are quite unrealistic and SpaceX will need to iron out its history of launch pad explosions. Plus, a vehicle with a much larger payload will need to be created. Too bad NASA scrapped the Saturn V in favor of the Space Shuttle which turned out to be a waste of time as far as human exploration of space. It's surprising to think that we are actually behind the technology of the 1960's when it comes to space exploration because there is no new Werner von Braun out there these days.

    Well, there's always Project Orion.

That'll surely cut down on the transit time!
