I didn't realize until reading this that it's the first rendezvous with a comet. I remembered the Deep Impact mission as well as some others but didn't realize that they were all just flyby missions. I had to go back and look them all up again. Very interesting, thanks for posting this.

When I recently became aware of the Rosetta Mission I had forgotten that I had heard some brief mention about it over ten years ago when the mission began. After ten plus years I am not surprised it slipped my mind. This is an astonishing endeavor. The fact of a large comet in such an orbit which allows us to study it amazing in itself. Exciting times we live in.

This is the still images library of the ESA: Space in Images - Search

It's an exiting mission. I really hope they can achieve a proper orbit and deploy the lander.

A good summary of the mission is given by Stuart Gary of the ABC: Rosetta reaches its comet › StarStuff (ABC Science)

If it's losing water at a rate of 300cc/sec (about 10 fl.oz.) already I wonder how much it will start outgassing when it gets closer to the sun. Maybe we'll be able to see the rubber duck when it starts floating in it's bathwater.

Its going to get very interesting when the probe send it's lander down to the surface of the comet, November is the scheduled attempt, can't wait, clear skies everyone.

Apparently it won't get too close to the Sun due to its orbit around Sol. This comet will only get as close to the Sun as about 1/2 way between Earth's and Mar's orbits. It won't outgas anywhere near as much as a comet which goes inside Mercury's orbit. I think that's why the ESA chose 67P.

Apparently when the probe lands on the surface of the comet it will anchor itself with hooks of some sort, so it will cling to the surface because there will be very little gravity, if any to keep it there. clear skies everyone.

I wonder what might happen if some de-icer was spread upon the comet?

Just kidding! It makes one wonder though when the harpoons which will be fired by the lander will be launched? Just before "touchdown" or after it lands? I imagine firing those anchors before landing then "reeling" itself down to make contact might work.

Ah. Found the answer to the harpoon question I asked. It will fire the harpoon after touchdown(fourth paragraph): The Rosetta lander / Rosetta / Space Science / Our Activities / ESA

So I assume these harpoons will be fired pretty well straight away , before it starts to drift away. So are the harpoons mounted high enough to give sufficient trajectory so they can clear any obstructions and pierce the likely very rocky surface? These fellas need to be paid even more money if they get this right. Clear skies everyone.
