If you happened to live on/in the Gliese 581g system and were stargazing from there we may be called GE 758 or such! just as we name other galaxies and systems! Yes No?

Perhaps someday it will be the "Robert C. Byrd Planetary System."

If we are want to put a more distinctive name on our Solar System, I would nominate "The Clarke Solar System" after Arthur C. Clarke... Besides being a notable Sci-Fi author Clarke was a prolific inventor and considered by many to be the "father" of the modern day communications satellite system...

After a lot more thought to your question, I have come up with the following answer.
We should call our solar system SMC1. and here is why. Messier catalouged a large portion of the northern hemisphere sky, Caldwell did the same for the southern hemisphere. So I arrived at S for sol M for messier and C for Caldwell, thus SMC1.
Does this make any sense or are my daydreams far to wierd and wild?
An alternative of course is the Newtonian system!

It just doesn't work, I don't personally think, because we call other places solar systems as well. So it can't be our name really.

This is a well thought out name.

And on another note, the wikipedia link pretty much defines the solar system as our name. Solar System - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As long as we are the only beings we know of in the galaxy "The Solar System" is adequate and as good as any other designation. Maybe if we encounter other intelligent beings and they are part of a large multi system organization we may have to adopt their label for our system.
