Personally, I think the private sector will be a positive element in mankind's space race.
A lot of people seem to think some greedy, corporate executive will be bad for space flight.
How could that be worse than a bunch of greedy, empty suits in Washington?

As I recall, it took the "cold war" with the Russians to get to the moon. Perhaps that's what we need again. Isn't it China's turn to get into space??? And ironically, when the shuttle Atlantis lands, the Russians will still be flying into space........for now.......

Greed seems to be the compelling force of the Universe. A Black Hole has its own form of greed. Interesting but probably predictable outcome for the United States; just disappointing.

I would love to see the (scrapped) Constellation program take off. Let's prove we can go back to the moon, and then we can talk seriously about going to Mars or Europa.

    I completely agree!......

BUT, (just my opinion)....I feel it ain't gonna happen. At least not in our lifetime.

"IF", NASA ever talks about Moon missions again, I truly believe that it'll be another 30-50yrs before we ever step foot up there again..And another 40-50 before we even talk about Mars Missions.... (specifically Manned Mars Missions)...maybe much longer. (realistically)

    That's my belief.

Who knows what the private sector might bring us in the future... but, as far as NASA goes, I have no faith in them, whatsoever.

I question the real profit margins of these privite companies. Building and Testing a rocket from scratch seems very expensive with no real profit in sight. Private investors are not interested in R&D or the betterment of mankind, just their wallets....

Terrestrial flight was largely developed with a profit motive I'm sure space will be the same. At least when it's done commercially there are some checks and balances. A program is not going to stay around just to keep a budget from being cut.

We haven't really explored the depths of the oceans. I'm sure private enterprise will do that before the government as well.

It doesn't matter that they (private enterprise) aren't doing it out of the goodness of their hearts. If it's a productive thing to do profits will be involved.

How can we complain that the government can't run their budget as we have to do in our individual households and then turn around and say that they need to fund a program to Mars?

All programs are useful to someone but they still have to be paid for. We haven't paid for those programs that we've already benefited from. It would be educational for me to visit Africa but my budget won't allow it this year.

I think the space program would do better to be a bit more focused on cost/benefit. Man isn't necessary if the real goal is to gain the most knowledge for the dollar. It's more entertaining for us but that's about it.

It's just like most new info from space isn't coming from optical telescopes but that's what we personally want to see and we might justify it in the name of science. It's really more about our entertainment.

I think NASA has been wasting money for the most part since the Moon days. 40 years of Space Station work? If someone was watching the bottom line I think we would have seen more results.

don't know, but i will be angry if the James Webb Space Telescope project gets canned [it shouldn't, but always a possibility]. i find it a little ridiculous that the U.S. military receives 685 billion dollars of funding while NASA receives 14.5 billion, and is being cut further. arghhhh the JWST is supposed to be theoretically used to view galaxies in their forming stages.... 25m^2 collecting area!

I doubt anyone on this site is against research in space and flight. But here is a link that will really get you depressed. The government spends more in air conditioning overseas then nasas entire budget....

This forum will not let me post a link yet... But it is easily found on google.

Keep Posting Bassplayer142, you'll get that Posting Privilege. These are scary times that we live in. They wish to turn the US into a Consumer Country with no Manufacturing Capability. Where do we earn the money to buy these products? We elect and pay these people for what. Sorry, a bit off topic. Our children and grandchildren need to be exposed to the Sciences. But again, there's no place for them to go with it.
