hi, my name is Nova (no really, my dad bought me "Exploding Suns" - a book on the physics behind novae - for my first birthday!), and i have finally bought my first telescope! It's just a little Meade 70mm refractor, but i'm planning to have some fun with it

my eldest, almost 5 years old, is fascinated with space - she is adamant she wants to visit saturn's rings when she grows up - so i'm hoping that she can learn about astronomy with me!

would greatly appreciate any advice on how to get the most out of my new 'toy' too

    nice to meet you all!

Yes, that is my real name. Except the nz bit.

Total newbie with a Meade 70mm refractor, and virtually LP-free New Zealand skies...

Hey fellow kiwis. I'm another Graham joining the New Zealand astronomers. Nice to meet you all!

I've always been very fascinated with space, and I'm finally ordering a telescope to take me into the skies Those BBC shows "Wonders of the Solar System" and "Wonders of the Universe" tipped me over the edge

I've got these on the way at the moment:

Meade 8" LX200 ACF UHTC Telescope

    Meade #126 Barlow Lens - 07273
Meade Zero Image Shift-Electronic Micro-Focuser for LX200 with AutoStar II
    Meade #62 SCT Camera T-Adapter for LX-Series Telescopes 07352
Meade T-Mounts (T-Rings) for 35mm and Digital SLR cameras
Meade Piggyback Brackets for LX-Series Telescopes 07394
    Meade #608 Dew Shield, for 7in LX200 or LX200GPS and all 8in SCT 07284

Here some prices are most insane than others. I couldn't believe what Meade here charge. For example the Zero Image Micro-Focuser is $1,099 here, but in NZ$ it's $297 in the states. Likewise with the telescope, $8,369 here, or in the states it's NZ $2,982.

If anyone here would like a hand ordering from overseas though, just let me know, I'd be happy to help.

I saw today someone else in Canterbury couldn't sell his 14" LX200R for $4000 (RRP on that is $13,699) on TradeMe, so I guess there isn't a huge demand here. But anyways, hopefully everything will arrive from the states before the end of this month and all work (fingers crossed!!!).

Previously I've been using my DSLR with a 100-400mm lens and a 2x Teleconverter (plus a huge ND filter for the sun shots below).

Being able to capture 3 planets in one shot was a thrill too, as was realizing I managed to get several of Jupiter's moons too!

In the 4th shot down, Io is up above the planet, then both Europa and Ganymede under it into the slightly larger blob. Then further away and faintly lit up, below and to the right of Jupiter is Callisto.

In the final photo, Mars is on the left, Venus up the top, and down the bottom right corner is little wee Mercury.

I really look forward to what I can see (and capture) through this telescope. I'm sure it'll be a huge learning experience, and that I'll learn lots from this forum. Thanks for taking the time to read this guys!

Hi Graham. I'm sorry I missed that auction for the 14" LX200R, I might have been interested. On the other hand we have that exact model at the Hamilton Observatory and it's been causing a lot of problems, apparently with no easy/affordable way to get it serviced. If anyone has any similar experience with Meades I'd be interested to hear about it.

I agree with you about local prices but to be fair I import a fair bit of non-astronomy equipment from the States and I often find that by the time I add freight and import duty the price difference isn't that much. Perhaps for some of the lighter & more expensive items it would be worth the effort to import directly. If I'm ever looking for some astro gear I might take you up on your offer of help. Cheers

Hi Dave. Nice to meet you

I looked through my history and here's the auction. There's an option to offer the seller a fixed price if you're interested:

    http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/List...x?id=388801820

Hopefully the one up at the observatory can get looked at though.

Agreed, often I find either it doesn't save much or someone else has already done most of the work already and is selling them on TradeMe. I seem to be saving quite a bit with this telescope though, but once everything is all done I can figure out exactly how much the saving was doing it this way.

Hi Manukau, If you're prepared to come this far I strongly recommend going a little further and coming to one of our public nights at Hamilton Observatory. This is the best way to have a look at some good telescopes and find out how they work. If you like what you see, become a member and get plenty of help from people much more knowledgeable than me.

I'm not allowed to post our website address but if you google Hamilton Astronomical Society you'll find it.

    Default Visiting NZ

    Hi All,

I am from the UK and am visiting NZ in the middle of next month. While I usually use an 8 inch telescope (Celestron CPC 800) that is a bit large to take to NZ with me, so I am taking a Skywatcher 80 (80 mm refractor) with me instead. I will be staying in Auckland but will have a car, so any suggestions for places to set up the telescope would be very welcome. Similarly, any suggestions as to what to look out for in the skies would be great. Hope someone can help. Best,

    Tony
