    Default iPolar from iOptron

    Hi

I'm very new to astrophtography, and have been struggling to find the SCP alignment (North Island, New Zealand). I'm starting out with a iOptron Skyguider Pro and a William Optics Refractor and DSLR. I use Stellarium to get the Skyguider as closely aligned by eye, and use iPhone with app to get accurate Latitude. I could not see Octans and related stars to align with through the scope. I found it too faint and awkward angle to look at.

As a result, I found the iPolar which seemed to be everthing I was looking for, so bought it and installed, thinking this would help me out. I have followed all instruction but cannot seem to get and kind of alignment. It keeps saying 9+ stars detected, Plate Solving failed. Then if I leave it a while long it flashes succeed and flashes the red dot on the screen. Only trouble is it flashes it in a different place each time. See video - it flashes bottom left a couple time then top right (I dont think I can post video yet so pm me for link)

Are there any other member here using iPolar that might be able to help me out?

    Many thanks

    Jason

I have not used iPolar, but I have had good luck with the polar align routine in SharpCap. SharpCap does have a provision for the southern celestial pole (and it does plate solve). You might give that a go and see of you have better luck?

    Thanks Brian.

Does Sharpcap require another guide scope or the like?

    Cheers

    I have not used ipolar.

What I have seen is a free app that I use with my alt/az goto.
The app also shows you the view you should be seeing when doing your polar alignment on the SCP.
It might be useful it might not, just putting it out there in case it is.

No, it does not require a guide scope. I've yet to jump on that band wagon.

I have been using the ipolar for a week week now at the bottom of the North Island and experiencing the same issues. V2 which came out the other day is a lot better but still not perfect but at least the red dot does not jump all over the place but it still disappears on you so you need to wait for a few frames before it reappears. I usually find if I cannot plate solve it is due my dark frame not being correct so sometimes I will take several dark frames until I hit on one which it seems to like and plate solves consistently. Last night I used the ipolar to get me to scp and then used ipolar with sharpcap to do my final alignment.
