Well, even I have been some time following this forum, I did not know there was a thread for south American astronomers.
So, let me introduce myself: a nurse with passion for stargazing, living in a very light polluted area in Bogotá, Colombia.
Actually, involved in sketching DSO seen from my location and posting them in my blog.

    Hi from Lima, Peru

A really nasty place for astronomy (but great for other things)... Living in this country for a few years now, I left all my astro stuff (Intes MAK and gear from Markus Ludes years ago) back in Europe, about 10 years without a scope. I travel now frequently to the southern Peruvian desert and what a sky!

I again need complete gear to get me going again (and cannot afford a Takahashi or a new wife). Now thinking of a a wider field, a good refractor, achromatic, 100-120mm, or even a MakNewton might work. A goto mount would be nice (I remember those long nights and long searches for faint nebulaes I sometimes never found - that must go quicker nowadays). There are not many 'economic' goto equatorial mounts that can manage a latitud of down to about 5º. Due to salty air, corrosion is a serious issue.

I haven't found any astro dealer here, therefore shopping from the US, Europe or even China (if I would get quality assured) appears to be the only way. I just contacted some guys in the US and hopefully we can work something out.

Hopefully I get it working ...

    Cheers, Heinrich

    Hi Heinrich,
I'm in Lima as well... and you're right... not the best place for this hobby.

I see you have discovered the Ica desert... very good place for stargazing... any place in particular? (Perhaps we can exchange some tips).

Hi ctortolini - Samaca. I'll go next Saturday just a day, then again around Oct. 6 for a few nights. Do you know of a good possibility having somebody bring scopes from abroad (my contacts got frightened when I told them about size and weight ...)?

Hey guys! This is Alessandro from Londrina. I´m 35 and got my psychology degree in the last year.I lived in america for 5 years (2005-2010) and my greatest regret was not to buy a decent telescope when I lived there. Here in Brazil is very expensive to buy a good telescope, because we don´t have any local brands and our currency exchange rate right now its almost 3:1 ( 3 Reais for 1 U$ dolar) and that make the dream to buy a telescope a little bit distant. My wife told me that she is going to give me a telescope next year. So I decided to star my research and my studies about astronomy this week. I think this is it for now. Sorry for any mistakes writing in english.

    Hi Alessandro,

    Bem-vindo!

This forum is great, you can learn a lot around here.
You can have dark skies not so far from Londrina, which is great.
A suggestion you will hear a lot is to get a pair of 10x50 Binoculars - can be an easier and cheaper way to start.

    Good luck and clear skies!

    Hello everyone,

I'm Marlon, from Goiânia, GO. Just a beginner but eager to learn. I don't have any telescope or binocular yet, but am already looking for a 10x50 or something alike to start hunting (the sky). If you know anyone from Goiânia that likes astronomy, please, let me know. Also, any tips regarding a binocular with a good price-performance to buy here in Brazil will be greatly appreciated!
