    i use an off axis an use less baader material an i find it works just fine. my pic on here shows it.of course the finder is a full piece.cost me like like32.00 fpr 8"x8" sheet an i made 4 filters.2 off axis
    CELESTRON C-8 Baader off axis solar filter , Celestron 40MM E-lux, PENTAX 10.5MM XL , TELEVUE ORIGINAL ZOOM 8MM-24MM ORION EXP 17MM, TELEVUE 2X BARLOW 8x50 finder with solar filter. color filters yellow, ,red,lite red,(23a) violet (47) n orange(21) for venus an mercury .

    I would think that the third option would give you diffraction issues as well. But then, I often think wrong.

    you mean off axis.not at all.many use them for many years,but. a glass solar filter for observing is much better.but for what i need its fine,i observe mainly in daylite,venus,mercury mars an jupiter(rarely) so i use the suns position to find the other planets.

    Not the off-axis; the half-circle, with the straight line, which I suspect could make for some interesting diffraction patterns.

    i see,i use to use window screening,2 pieces at angles on the planets years ago-it was a called a diffraction grating screen.an got great images but its been so long like 35 years i forgotten how to use that.roger tuthill showed me that.ordinary window screen tuned a certain way.ever hear of that.i know when one uses the off axis the focal lenght increases an not much loss of light.
