    Default Sun Funnel

Inspired by all the solar viewing talk lately I decided to build a sun funnel using the nasa directions

    https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/make-sun-funnel

Had to start from scratch ( I had bought the Carl's rear projection film a while ago).

    • Hacksaw, sandpaper from Harbor Freight.
    • Funnel #05034 from OReilly auto.
    • Hose Clamps from Home Depot. Could not get the exact clamps in the instructions, but a 5" one worked for the larger end. (instruction says 5.5")
    • Carl's Real Projection screen sample pack https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00XAL65NW/
    • Used a 9mm Plossl

Got to test it out today with Meade Adventure 80mm and the ES Exos Nano EQ mount, tracking (very rough polar alignment).
Even though it was mostly cloudy...

Notes: It works even if your cuts are not straight or perfect . Had the pull apart the ends of the funnel after the vertical cut, to squeeze the EP in. Unsure which projection film to use in the sample pack. Two were rear projection, used one of them (gray one).
You do see a bright central glow if you look vertically at the funnel.

Could not see AR 2737 but that is probably due to the thin clouds.

My previous attempt was a simple screen on a non tracking mount which worked, but I had to move the screen and the scope frequently.

Well done! Have you tried stopping the scope down to 40mm? This seems to improve the contrast.

I don't mind tracking manually, I do mind clouds blocking me from viewing AR 2737.

Well, today was cloudy, so it got really dim when I stopped it down. Will have to try it on a better day.
Also will play around with the different screens to see if contrast improves.
