Default One Month Until The Big Day!

Getting excited for the upcoming total eclipse, I have Monday August 21 off from work and have plans to place myself somewhere in the path of totality! Weather permitting, I'll be somewhere in Missouri (closest drive for me from Michigan), but if the weather isn't cooperative I plan on being flexible in my choice of destinations to try and get the best experience. I am considering bringing my 4.5" scope with solar filter along for some observing, although part of me is saying just experience this event without fiddling around with a scope. What are your recommendations? I've seen an annular eclipse once in my life (back in 1994 I think) but never a true total solar eclipse. Will I have to remove the solar filter during the period of totality to see anything? Obviously during the partial phases the filter has to stay on lol!

Everybody here has the day off, schools will be out, factories are shutting down, the number of people that will be here will cause traffic to STOP and Emergency departments are already telling people to stay home.

I seriously suggest filtering your binoculars. Don't have a pair? Shame on you, EVERY astronomer NEEDS a pair of binoculars. There is still time and Harbor Freight sells some quite good 10x50s for less than $25. A sheet of solar film and you can easily make your own filters. During the time of totality, the filters come off. At the time of the "Diamond Ring" they go back on. Driving just a little further brings you to my town for the full 2 minutes and 40 seconds of totality.

I'm right on the path, but my house will only get 11 seconds. I plan to travel 60 miles to St. Joseph, Missouri to get the 2m 38s of totality. They're expecting about 100,000 people at the airport event. I didn't really plan on going to a big festival, but we might as well.
It's only my wife and I. I'd like to make it a family event, but I can't afford to fly the kids up here.
I don't have the equipment to take serious photos either. I suppose we'll drive up there and play it as it goes.

I'd use a scope, binos and just solar glasses. Cover all the bases.

I'm probably going with the scope/solar glasses combo. My scope is fairly lightweight and about as portable as you can get. The solar filter for it is easy, just snap on and snap off. I'll probably get a pair of eclipse glasses for when I'm not viewing through the scope.

We will get 99% here at my house. My wheelchair will not do the thirty miles to get 100%. So I will be using glasses, binoculars with filters, and a solar telescope with Orion Starshoot to record event. Good viewing to all.
