Default Zwo 120mc hot Spot Help

    Hi

I was using my Zwo 120mc camera today on my nexstar 5se and had a go at first attempt of filming the sun with filter on.

For some reason i have 2 marks on the movies and single pictures, i checked the camera by turning it around and the marks stayed in the same place, i checked the filter and turned that and also checked the lens and outside but could not see anything wrong with it. Whatever i did the spots stayed in the same place no matter where i moved the telescope to view the sun, i did get the camera 2nd hand.

I can not remember the setting like gain and exposure as messed about with them till i got a good image, have i got the camera in to close even with the adapter on it.

Unsure what to do and what went wrong.

Liam I moved your thread over here to the solar viewing sub forum where our solar fanatics might be better able to advise and assist you.

    Almost looks like sunspots?
    But they cannot be.

if they stay in the same place arn't they not *sun spot* .

ok forget the joke. do the spots move with the telescope so they are actually definitely dust motes ? believe it or not zwo (how i would think)don't manufacture there ccds to how i would day i high anti contamination standard, sometime you'll find bits of machined aluminum in the ccd area and what not but normaly they are very clean. there might be a problem on your ccd chip,(bit of dust blowing might do the trick)

    Hi

Thanks for sending it to right forum for me, they do look like sunspots but I have turned the zwo camera around and they do appear in the same spot.

How do you clean a sealed compartment on a zwo, dust blowing would on work on top of lense above chip would it not.

    Thanks for replies.

If your moving the camera and the spots do not move it is NOT the camera. In extreme cases that the cmos sensor cover gets a few motes and a bulb blower does not get rid of them it can be gently be cleaned using a quality q-tip and a solution of 60% Filtered distilled water and 40% Isopropyl alcohol (90% kind at the very least). Are you using a barlow lens? If so use a bulb blower. If your using a refractor check the front lens.

    Hi

I am using a nexstar 5se, not been using Barlow lens as in close enough for sun to try and get some pictures. I did say I was unsure what the problem was as I said I noticed that the same spots are in same spot even with camera rotated. I checked the lens and tried my canon 600d on it and that left no images in screen shots so not telescope either I think, there is a few dust marks on front of telescope and I looked inside with eyepieces out and mirror seemed clean and all I could see was my eye reflecting back.

The sensor is very small and as such with really show the smallest speck. Clean the lens well and anything else in between that and the sensor that may have particles.

I'm not sure about the orientation of your scope but, comparing your image to that posted by Bizibuilder, ( correct orientation ) I'd stick my neck out and say that the lower one was a sun spot.
Google " Spaceweather " and you should be able to confirm if they are sun spots.

Thanks for the info, I did not realise it was the wrong way around either, this hobby seems to get harder for me by the day. Least now I can check which is the right way around from now on.
