Thanks JR1, you are correct, it is out of focus. What came off the card was not what I saw in either the view finder or the screen. What was on the screen was sharp and crisp. The equipment used for this exercise was an old (1981) C8 SCT that the focus knob that wobbles a tiny bit. These old C8 scopes can suffer from what I understand as "mirror slip". As I don't have a remote to initiate the shutter, I use a timer. The camera is set to take 10 exposures, which I believe could make the scope vibrate.

The old tripod does have some issues that can cause vibration especially when the wind is blowing. One more thing I did notice, is the amount of slump that is generated when the optical train is stressed by the weight of all the stuff added on to the tail of the scope. I doubt this caused the focus issue, as when I focused the scope for the shot(s) the view finder (and my eye) was happy with the focus.

Finally the old $50.00 (CAN) Canon 1100D is approaching 10,000 picture by the counter. Who knows if or how many times it has been re-set. I do use, to the best of my knowledge, the best SD cards I can get.

I promise, I won't pollute the site with any more sub-standard photos.

I agree with John and Bryan, Brent, don't give up. You wanna see out of focus??
    Image3.jpg

Yeah, the eclipse. First photos of the Sun I'd ever taken. What a bummer that was. Even worse, I had my T3 hooked up to a laptop with the Canon software, and it was out of focus, and my ISO was at 800, whereas 100 is max, it seems (for me). And it looked great on the screen, I thought I knew what I was doing....

Well, after a while, some great advice from John, I discover that by taking a lot of photos, starting with what looks good in live view, then tweaking the focuser a bit either way, all the while snapping the pics, you'll get something in focus. Even with my glasses on, it's hard to see the edge of the sun sharply, and sunspots are only marginally better. And those LCD screens are pretty tiny...

Eventually you'll get something like this, and this was a "focuser-tweak" shot through a little C80-HD with some Baader film, much like yourself:
    Image01.jpg Image3.jpg

I took about 15 shots, and that was the only one in good focus. Has John gone over feculae with you? If not, he will
Heed John's advice, Bryan's too; as for me, I'll just hound ya, buddy

Hope you get some Sun, we're totally socked in here.

We had the "Technical Talk". John would have made a great teacher, I keep reminding him I'm "Adoptable". Nevada in the winter sounds like as good a place as for all aspects of the Astronomy game. I'd melt in the summer time though!

When I bought that old C8 the guy gave me three books, one is "The Quiet Sun". I read like a sloth, but remember almost everything. However, I read a few paragraphs and have to put it down and decide what I want to believe.

Thanks to some input from the FatKitty I have the software/hardware working to get my camera to work in conjunction with my computer. Thank you Mark. While I appreciate the fact that a DSLR is the "old school" way to image, it is what I have. I have done research into the mine-field of dedicated CMOS/CCD cameras. Not only is it confusing, it is pricey.

I have no idea which part of this hobby will bite me next. I made myself a promise, which I intend to keep. I believe I own the proper equipment to visually see the brightest 70 Messier objects. That is the first order of business, it might even be possible to capture a few of them with the DSLR and one of the fracs I already own. My C8 has me frustrated, I believe I have discovered a couple of my issues.

Solar viewing is a very interesting part of astronomy. I only have limited equipment to do white observing/AP. Ha, is going to take me a while to get going on. After talking to Lowjiber, I have made my mind up on what I would source for equipment. I already have a mount and scope that will get me started. I need a new camera and the Quark. Your time on getting me up to speed on SAP and processing will not go to waste John, thanks.

I am a "Glass half empty" kind of guy. But also a realist, making the best out of what you have. I will plod along attempting to make silk purse out of a sows ear. AND, will spare you all the discomfort of seeing the learning curve. I appreciate the photos, renderings or whatever the finished products are called that the good Imagers post. That is worth the time to look at and study.
