Default SkyWatcher SynScan AZ GOTO Mount and Celestron SLT & GT AZ Mount Accuracy

The Celestron NexStar SLT and GT Azimuth GOTO Mounts and the SkyWatcher SynScan Azimuth GOTO Mount are essentially mechanically and electronically identical but do differ in their firmware. Several issues impacting goto accuracy are common with these mounts. Fortunately, the solutions to these issues are easy and cheap to do without negating any warrantees.

The Celestron SLT, Celestron GT, Celestron Prodigy, and SkyWatcher SynScan AZ GOTO mounts as well as the iOptron SmartEQ and SmartEQ PRO equatorial mounts use the same tripod. This tripod has some issues that impact both accuracy of the mounts and stability (vibration). Here are links to two thread that discusses interventions to reduce the tripod's vibration and improve goto accuracy. The thread gets off to a slow start but then discusses simple fixes to many problems associated with the tripod.

One intervention discussed is NOT TO EXTEND THE EXTENSION LEGS. Here is a link that describes a modification to allow extending the extension legs on the tripod used for the iOptron SmartEQ, Celestron SLT, Celestron GT, and SkyWatcher SynScan AZ mounts. Easy way to remove play in lower tripod legs?

The attachment method for the dovetail on the 130P also is a source of vibration that many find objectionable. Here is a link to a thread that discusses a fix by for this source of vibration: Vibration and movement Explorer SynScan AZ Goto 130

Another approach that works is discussed in this thread:

    2. Here is another modification to improve tripod stability for an iOptron tripod but will work for most lightweight tripods:

Default what about the American version - aluminum legs

Thanks for the information. I read through much of the thread on using epoxy to strengthen the tripod, but it seems geared toward the European version with Stainless Steel legs. I have the American version with Aluminum legs.

The "adding the rings" modification should be the same and looks quite useful. But where would you suggest I get the rings for my 130mm reflector?
