Default SkyWatcher EQ6-R Pro mount polar scope issue

Not sure this is the right place for this .....

went to use my new mount last night to practice some AP & after turning on the mount when I looked through the PS all I could see was this bright red haze .... the black etchings of the reticle were clearly visible but you could see nothing of the sky through this red haze. The only other PS I've looked through is the one from my iOptron SkyTracker & when you turn that one one the etchings are highlighted in red making it easy to see against the black sky?

isn't this how they work? I found the polar scope LED brightness function this morning but it doesn't seem to do anything. looking through the PS in the daytime you see no red light but when you hold you hand in front of the PS opening you get the same blurry red haze, changing the brightness didn't seem to do anything. I'll have to try again tonight but I thought the whole purpose of the red LED was to highlight the reticle in red similar to how an illuminated crosshair EP works for star alignment ? what am I missing?

i'm not using the polar scope due to low latitudes i'm in but i have checked it now to see the issue you have described is there. i cannot see any red haze when the led brightness is set to 0% from hand controller. its completely dark when covered from front. try to reduce PS led brightness to very low value and see if the issue still exist.

I don't know why the brightness control does not work.

There are two illumination techniques in use: you can illuminate the face of the reticle, in which case the entire FOV is red and black markings show up, or you can illuminate the edge, in which case the red light is confined to the interior of the reticle, and is only visible where it hits the markings and is reflected. In other words, the markings on the EQ6 are a dark nebula in front of an emission nebula, whereas the markings on the iOptron are a reflection nebula in front of dark space.

You should be able to see stars through the red haze on the EQ6. Turning down the brightness should allow that. Be sure to rotate the dec axis to one of the two positions that allow light to pass through the shaft, otherwise the view of the sky will be blocked. This is a common gotcha on Skywatcher mounts.

Thx all. I used the hole where the polar scope would go all the time when I had my CGEM II to do rough alignments so I’m very familiar with having to rotate the mount ... in addition the EQ6 has a retractable counter weight rod (nice feature!) but if you forget to extend it you see this nice black rod down the center of your view. Hopefully, dimming the red LED brightness in the dark will make it work. I’m taking out just the mount tonight to see if I can get this to work since until I can do an accurate PA theres’ not much point in doing the rest of aP ....

Problem solved ... had to drop the PS LED brightness down to 20% but then stars are easily visible ...
