Default Esprit 100 ED APO Triplet

Hi. I was considering buying this scope, but I heard there were problems with it (namely, poor collimation). Does anyone have this scope? How are you finding it? Thanks,
    -Charles

I'm picking up one of these myself. The collimation issues you mentioned were with the first generation Petzval version of this scope. They are history. The newer 100ED Esprit is a triplet Apo and is delivered with a dedicated field flattener, MicroTouch compatible focuser that I am quite positively impressed with, and a number of other goodies. It looks like great value for the money to me and I have seen a number of superb images acquired with this scope. There are two interesting threads comparing Esprit scopes to other premium Apo refractors over on the Cloudy Nights Refractor forum, the current thread addresses the SW100ED Esprit, definitely worth a look...

Since the discussion is about Sky Watcher scopes, would you happen to know how the Esprit 100 ED APO Triplet compares with the ProED 120mm Doublet APO Refractor?..... Considering both visual and AP uses in your answer if possible...
    Thanks,
    Rich

They are two very different telescopes Rich. The 100ED Esprit is an f/5.5 imaging and visual platform (weighted toward imaging) and, as a triplet Apo, is extremely well corrected for color and spherical aberrations. It is also a tank! At 16 pounds clean it outweighs the 120ED by five pounds and is MUCH shorter...compact for easy handling and mounting. The 120ED Pro is a longer f/7.5 instrument that is extremely well corrected for in focus color, and it can also get the job done for imaging...though doublets are not generally considered to be the ideal for AP work. I have, however, had considerable imaging success with my SW100ED Pro and can say from experience that it will work just fine with the dedicated flattener/reducer. I have seen some amazing images acquired with the 120ED Pro and would have no issues with owning one (I may one day ).
In practical terms, the 100ED Esprit is a hefty imaging machine that will also provide great visual performance (think wide field here), and will likely require a mount in the Atlas/CGEM range for AP work, something to consider. The 120ED Pro can comfortably ride on a Sirius class mount for observing and lunar/planetary imaging...you would probably want to up-gun to the Atlas/CGEM level for DSO work as it is a rather long OTA. Hope this helps!

    Hi,

Don´t know if you made the Choice yet?

Just wanted to chime in and say that I went with the Esprit 120 last year and so far I am very happy with it!

I was also debating between the Equinox 120 ED Pro and the Esprit series, but in the end I went with the Esprit and I am glad I did.

    Hello Guiller...

Thanks for the insight, and I will consider it in my choice which I haven't made yet. I'm waiting to hear more on the Meade 115 APO refractor, not much feedback on it yet.

Be careful taking too seriously what you read in the astronomy BBSes and chat rooms. Those problems are from years ago.

Indeed. Like has been said before. All the problems you´ve heard about are related to the 5-element Version of the Esprit 100, which was taken out of prodcution again the same year.

The regular 3-element APO´s of the Esprit series (80, 100, 120 and 150) have all received good reviews.
