Hi! Greetings from a fellow stargazer from Malaysia! The 130mm reflector is a great choice for a beginner - I'm using a 120mm refractor myself! I'm not sure what is the cost of the Astromaster 130eq with motor-drive in Malaysia, although I see a listing in Lelong for RM1300 Celestron Astromaster EQ 130 Telescope (Kuala Lumpur, end time 2/19/2015 7:51:00 PM MYT)

A word of caution though - although the EQ mount is the best, I'm not sure if it's the best for a newcomer. You will definitely have a steep learning curve on using this mount, but once you get the hang of it, it will be very easy to track and find celestial objects when properly configured.

Do you have any Astronomy groups in Sandakan that you can refer to?

hi isr25, thanks for your info.

actually, china taobao offer the best in terms of pricing and free delivery (depends) to my place, i'm still comsidering the quality and how genuine they are due to i'm totally new with limited budget.

imagine, according to their seller info (these 2 brand sharing the same identical design i guess, read from other site)
    1. the skywatcher 130eq2 (without motor-drive i guess), weighting 22kgs with price of renminbi 1280 (less than MYR800)
    2. celestron astromaster 130eq (with motor-drive, and all-in necessary accessories), weighting less than 11kgs with price of renminbi 1950 (less than MYR1300) (other site do mention celestron replace many parts to plastic material, it's good as you can carry it around in light, but, how about the built quality, how about stability, do telescope talk about stability?)

for astromaster 130eq, there are many bad reviews of bad finder scope and mount quality. however the skywatcher is not sold in full basic accessories. i would not have any idea how costly to buy all the basic accessories in piece by piece as i'm new.

so, i'm still stuck in deciding which should i get.

at this moment, i'm still thinking how far would i go for this interest/hobby. never try never know, i like complicated things/knowledge/skill, of course with the help of the power of internet and forum...

i do not think sandakan have astronomy group yet. :-)

    Hi ckhsteve,

I just noticed Orion3 is also from Sabah, but he hasn't been online for the past 2 months - you can see his username in the 1st page of this thread. Skywatcher and Celestron are both good telescope makers, but I'm using a Skywatcher myself.

Telescopes do place importance on mount stability. As you're watching something very distant, every small vibration is magnified when viewing through the eyepiece. So normally for viewing celestial objects, if the mount is rated to handle 10kg, only put up to 70% of it's rated payload capacity for more stable viewing.

You should not do an impulse buy for telescopes. Take your time on finding the right one, and just familiarise youself with the sky at nights for now. As your chosen telescopes do not have a go to function, you might need to learn how to hunt those deep sky objects - the planets (Venus, Mars, Jupiter Saturn) are easy. For telescopes, the bigger the diameter, the more light gathering capability it has (planets appear brighter, you can see more deep space objects). So a 130mm for a beginner is superb!

No worries on the Astronomy group. I don't have one in JB (that I know of) too!

    Hello, apa khabar
Just joined the forum today. Have had a long time interest in astronomy but skies here in Klang Valley are quite disappointing most nights. More about me in my introduction thread.
