    Default Not-so-clear skies in Panama

Well, long gone are the nights that were clear and allowed me to see the vastness of the Universe, the last two months I think we've gotten like 3 o 4 partially clear skies. Since the clouds have been getting in the way for so long I guess they are looking for attention so I decided to learn a bit about photography with them using a point-and-shoot camera so that when the time comes to take some images of clear skies with it I might have a better idea of what I'm doing. In this case in particular I just wanted to learn from experience the effects of ISO and shutter speed. Here are 2 pics of the Moon being blocked by clouds using ISO 400 and a shutter speed of 2 second

    IMG_5214.JPG IMG_5218.JPG

The Moon was at about 40 degrees from the zenith at the time.

And this is a picture of the zenith with an ISO 400 and shutter speed of 8 seconds

    IMG_5224.JPG

I just tried with ISO 400 because on a test I did indoors in a room with very dim lights it was the ISO that in my opinion captured the most light without too much noise. I will continue playing with the camera while I wait for skies to clear at least a bit. I will also try CHDK since the camera I have is a Canon to see if I can tweak the setting even more.

    Cheers

Glad to see you found a use for the clouds! Who says they just get in the way of the stars!

    Cheers

Indeed, have to make the best out of any situation

Too bad the skies have been so cloudy lately, there's a lot of stuff I would like to try or watch but haven't had a chance so far and since one of those things is taking some pictures through the eyepiece (afocal photography I think this setup is called) I figured I would just start playing with the camera to learn the basics so that I'm not completely lost when I get the chance to do it for real. Hopefully I will get a chance to post a picture of the Moon in the coming days instead of the Moon behind clouds.

Hope you are getting better skies than I.

    Cheers

Well, Saturday was even worse, clouds were so dense that you could not even see the moonlight reflecting on them. I thought I would get a chance to take a few pictures since when the moon was rising on the horizon you could actually see it. It had a nice reflection on the ocean but I didn't have a camera at the moment but when I got back home, it was nowhere to be seen. Let's see how Sunday night comes.

Well, so far there's been no clear skies here in Panama, only clouds on top of clouds. I think I've seen about 5 patches of skies where you can spot a few stars for a few minutes since the last post. Even running to get binoculars would be fruitless as these patches between moving clouds last about 5 minutes at best. However, I did manage to get a few shots of the Moon yesterday at around 11pm with a small scope that was lent to me, a Zhumell Eclipse 114 (I didn't have my XT10 with me at the moment)

    moon_20130625.jpg

This image is the result of 20 frames shot with a Canon SD750 modded with CHDK to allow exposures of 1/160 sec. in burst mode and ISO 80. I shot the images through a 20mm Kellner eyepieces, prepped each image with PIPP and stacked them with AutoStakkert!2. Considering that the moon was actually behind some light clouds I think they came out pretty well. Good thing the moon is quite bright.

Let me know your thoughts and if you have any inputs to help me improve on this particular art they will be more than welcome.

    Cheers,
    Tonin
