Question Meade Adventure 80 Focuser Replacement

Has anyone put the Crayford on it yet?
My sample actually has a very good stock one compared to some of the ST80s I've had.
I also cleaned it out and put some white grease in there, it really does work well for what it is.

But I just can't leave things alone, LOL I'm thinking of adding the single speed GDP.
But my concerns are balance issues with that shorty dovetail.
I'm not in the mood to drill new holes are splurge for rings.

    Any takers?

I have two ST80s, one has the GSO 2" focuser, the other I left stock and cleaned up. The 2" focuser will add a lot of weight to the rear end and you will need a longer dovetail bar to balance. I replaced the focuser on the first one. I decided to leave the second one as is, which is fine (after I cleaned it up).

Yea, I really should just leave it be, I bought it for travel and quick views. It even rides nice on my photo tripod, an Orion Paragon HD.

Auto correct changed GSO to GDP, LOL

If you want a cheaper and lighter solution to avoid balance issues, many people upgrade their Nexstar 102 scopes, so those focusers are easy to find on the used market. There are many postings on improving them to "near Crayford" performance levels. The three most popular mods are:
1: Clean out the Synta mystery goo and very lightly apply lithium grease to the rack, or run it dry with a tiny trace of graphite on the rack and slightly more graphite on the friction pad.
2: Replace the stock friction pad with Delrin (it wears better than Teflon, and the low friction of Teflon is not needed here).
3: You probably don't have enough travel in the rack to add a helical focuser with a 2" diagonal like you can for the Nexstar, but if you can mount it in a way that lets you use it without the diagonal, the 2" helical focusers are sold on eBay for $62 with free shipping.

Yes, I upgraded to a GSO 2" linear bearing focuser on my Meade AS80. It does make it tail heavy and I switched to rings and an 8" dovetail.
I also opted for the 2" Quartz mirror diagonal. But it did make a big improvement. But it is no longer just a grab and go, at least not like before the mods. But I love it, I may get another and leave it in stock configuration. But for right now, I found at the local Goodwill store a Meade 60mm, 350mm, f 5.8 . Probably doesn't way a pound and a half, but from what I have seen, it has great views through it. All in a carry bag with all the included eyepieces and tripod, for $10.00.
I have a severe case of GAS, thanks to everyone here. Bryon.

    Thanks, Mike
