Default Small portable refractor for DSO astrophotography

I'm looking at adding a portable refractor to my arsenal.

Any body have any experience with astrophotography with this scope? Orion Sirius ED80 EQ-G Computerized GoTo Refractor Telescope

Looking to spend under $2000 for mount and scope. I'm also looking at a Stellarvue and Celestron VX mount .Any other recommendations are welcome.

    Thanks in advance.

ED80 on an eqg is a nice kit - nut you'll need the mini orion guider to go with it

You may wish to seriously consider Stellarvue. I have just received an SVED80A which is only a few hundred more expensive. I've only been indoor optical testing it but it's essentially perfect optically and snaps to focus more crisply than the Orion scope (which my daughter now has).

Since you have a EOS body.... https://www.amazon.com/Canon-400mm-S.../dp/B00009USW3

Very versatile, with autofocus option and can also be used as a camera lens. Very good 2nd hand value.

Get a Stellarvue SV80ED and an iOptron ZEQ25GT used and your golden. Loved that rig for years.

    Hello,

You would do well with either the Stellarvue or Orion 80mm ED doublets... however, as far as doublets are concerned, I am slightly biased

To make the Orion ED80 good for AP, here is a breakdown of what I would deem to be a great startup that will last:

    Orion ED80 OTA: $450.00
Orion #13032 Crayford Dual Speed Focuser (5-10 mins to install, night and day difference!): $135.00
    Orion #7371 Mounting rings: $34.00
Vixen Dovetail bar: $20 - $40 depending on where you get one... Can't go wrong with ADM but any universal dovetail bar will work as long as it meets your length requirements
Orion Magnificent Mini Autoguider package (#24781): $335.00
Celestron Advanced VX EQ mount: $900.00

Roughly $1800 - 1900 bucks. Plus don't forget you will still need a good T-ring adapter, a power supply and a few other nickels and dimes to get up and imaging.

With the ZEQ25 and Stellarvue, you'd be looking at about the same... and I would still recommend the same autoguider- it is caveman easy to set up and run with.

I personally cannot say enough about the Orion ED80 as an imaging scope and the AVX for a grab n go mount. It is very well made, and doesn't even come close half of the AVX's payload capacity. Like Paul mentioned above, the ED80/AVX was my main imaging setup for my first few years, and I regret selling that mount to this day.

Here is the last image I worked on with the ED80 / AVX. Horsehead, 10min exposures:

As you can see, the ED80 is capable of resolving some pretty delicate detail (I'm sure the Stellarvue would do just as well, but hey, I said I'm biased lol!).

One last thing I just thought of... Eventually, with any refractor, you'll want to get a field flattener to minimize the 'stretching' of stars and objects toward the corners of your frames. The Hotech SCA/FF is very popular and runs about $160.00, but you can still get great images without one.

Hope this helps, and happy hunting

    Mike
