    Default reporting nothing...



    How often do we read "consumer reports" on Amazon, B + H, etc. saying "This is a great scope", "I would recommend it to a friend", "Everything I hoped for" and then as you read a little further you see "well I haven't used it yet !" WTF?
    Regrettably I find myself in the same situation but with a twist. Even before I look at a star through the scope something was not right.
    My VisionKing 80 mm f 7.5 arrived after 6 weeks on the slow boat from China (December 3 rd.). Nice white eggshell OTA finish, OG has a green AR coating, retractable lens hood, no EP's as expected, dual speed focuser looks professional and good solid mounting rings. No packaging damage so some optimism there.
    Out of the box and the dual speed focuser works only to rack out. Does not rack in. Also the slightest manual force on the Crayford (as if a camera was attached) would move the focuser out. Don't point anywhere near the zenith!
    OK, so since it took 6 weeks to arrive do I want to return it under warranty and wait for a replacement? No sir!
    Screw the warranty-let's see what's wrong. Maybe I can fix it.
    Racking problem is due to one of the 4 small bearings being 1) very stiff and jerky 2) lt's mount stud is loose, like not pressed fully into its hole.
    No fix possible by me. However the reassembly seemed to put the errant bearing back into a useable position but now the Crayford will only work well using the slow speed knob. It has more mechanical advantage and can overcome the resistance of the bad bearing. Well-no biggy yet.
    Let's live with that. And as for a star test?
    I'll let you know when the skies clear. "I haven't used it yet".....

    Sorry to hear about the bearing. I have heard of a 90 damaged in shipping. Once notified the seller had a new one to them lightning fast without contemporaneous return shipping of the damaged scope. From what I have seen sellers have return facilities here in the US. I would definitely contact the seller. It might be as simple as sending you a new focuser. If it's the same focuser as in my 90 it's a very decent linear bearing type.

    Sorry to hear about the issue with the focuser. Maybe someone will know where to source replacement bearings from.
    Hopefully you will be able to get it out under the stars very soon.

    That's too bad. I would still try to contact the company. Check if they are willing to send you a replacement focuser and you will send defective back when replacement arrives.

    I had my share of bad luck with Crayfords. I tried to upgraded one speed R&P on my 120ST. I bought Orion dual speed Crayford and it came defective. Amazon was quick to send replacements, but two replacements were defective to. After 3 bad Crayfords in a raw my R&P became more attractive to me and I decided to keep it.

    Sadly, your and my experience indicate lack of even basic QC at the factories in China.

    Hope that you manage to satisfactorily resolve your problems and be able to get some sky time in. It is a nice looking scope.

    Thanks all for your good advice on the Crayford problem. I will certainly send it back but my secondary concern is to the imaging quality of the OG.
    Until I can get a good night under a star/s I won't know how good the OG is. I want to judge the scope as an entire item, not just the focuser. If the OG is poor also the whole thing will go back and I will consider something more reliable, never mind an increase in cost.
