Default GSO 112mm focuser fitting a Orion by Vixen or Celestron by Vixen 102mm refractor

I have several options available, but I want to upgrade the focuser on my Orion by Vixen 102 to a 2" dual speed crayford.

Anyone with either scope done this yet? If so was it a direct fit with no issues?

I would contact Mannish at Agena Astro. He should be able to tell you what is needed to do this.

I've been talking to Manish because the 112mm GSO focuser was a candidate for the upgrade. He was kind enough to return my email promptly and went so far to send me a CAD rendering from GSO of the focuser to compare measurements. He indicated the fitting has to be spot on and I don't believe thats the case with the GSO product. Its not exactly 112mm, its like 112.6mm and thats enough offset to not make it work for me. There was another measurement that also appeared to discourage the fit so combining both its DOA with this possibility. Now if someone out there can say otherwise, I'll just have to look elsewhere, if at all. Actually the focuser on the Orion/Vixen is decent, but it has no fine focus adjustment and that is where it needs improvement. However, I just bought a CGEM and I noticed the RA at rest is more stable than my CG5GT so that may be the solution to that movement I was getting when trying to final focus with the CG5.

I know the Moonlite 2' focuser fits like a glove because I know someone who has done it. He stepped up because he believes the 102 is a good enough scope to deserve it even though the focuser is worth more than the scope. Just by snooping around and asking some questions I've learned the Orion and also the Celestron version are loved by many people, I think there is even a Yahoo group promoting its excellence. I agree the more I compare the views with what I have the more I also believe it is an outstanding instrument that has been flying around under the radar for some time. Maybe it does deserve the Moonlite upgrade afterall, at least Moonlite makes a flange and focuser to fit it so they must recognize it as well. The problem with fitting a focuser also extends to finding rings for the OTA. Sizing questions have bounced between 114mm to 115mm for the OTA and I have read people claiming one or the other. At this point I strongly believe it is 115mm and even though I measured it with my calipers, you can't always get a super accurate read that way. I would like to even get a pair of 114mm rings and simply try it on for size and go from there. I know Vixen makes 115mm rings and I think WO as well, but they aren't affordable to me.

I did contact Moonlite once to find out if they could make a flange for me to fit a spare ES focuser I have. They said they couldn't do it, I don't know why. The ES focuser flange doesn't look all that universal to me, in fact its secured to the OTA by two very small hex screws, maybe 3mm, 4mm max.

I can at this point roll the dice and have Crawmach make a flange based on my measurements, which I know can be off a bit or forget about it all together now that I have a more stable mount. The custom flange by Crawmach is not that bad in price, $70. So if it fits great, if not I won't be out that much for trying. If I don't like the two small 3mm connector holes I can always tap them out and make them slightly larger or have Crawmach add an additional hole to the flange for a stronger fit and less potential for flexure.

I have to thank Manish at Agena on this one. Talk about customer service going above and beyond the call of duty.
