Default Cheapest usable mount for a 4" refractor

    Hello!

I'd like to know which is the cheapest mount you would suggest for a 4" refractor. I want something light but usable and cheap and I don't need any tracking. I'll invest in a more expensive mount later, one that will accomodate a heavier reflector.

    Thanks!
    Etienne

Unfortunately, cheap in the area of alt-az mounts means a minimum of about $300 for a 4 inch refractor. I think a Vixen Porta-II would be good but it is $319.00. You could go with an Astrotech Voyager for about $300 which would do the job but the mount, in my opinion, has too many shortcomings at that price when you can get a Unistar Basic (minus the tripod) for about the same money. You could get a small equatorial possibly for less, but then you sacrifice simplicity. Orion has the VersaGo II for less than $200 and it claims to be able to handle up to 15 pounds so that might be the cheapest option that might work. They have a good return policy I am told.

I see, the VersaGo looks like what I was looking for. But I found many used mounts that are very cheap, I might go with this option.

    Thanks,
    Etienne
