Default CCD camera instead (in place) of secondary mirror

    Hi guys,

I want to mount my CCD camera in place of the secondary mirror to create a pure imaging scope. Has anyone got any experience or information on such a project? I was going to use an electronic focuser and a Explorer Scientific coma corrector, filters would have to be changed by hand for astro imaging. The main mirror is a 14inch F5. The cabling for the CCD and the electronic focuser I want to integrate into the spyder vanes. I am a bit worried that image quality will be affected by the heat coming of the CCD cooler but people with the Hyperstar have'nt reported such problems. Any advice would be highly appreciated.

    Regard,
    Markus (Reunion island)

Very interesting, but is there more positive then hassle over the design?

    Hi,

I just found an article about a liquid mirror telescope that uses the same setup I wanted to use in regards to imaging directly at the secondary mirror position so it will work. Maybe I can even find a low footprint filter wheel system.

RASC scopes have a camera in place of the secondary.

Don't forget your focus point will be another 9 or so inches further away from the primary than where the secondary would normally sit.
Be aware that you camera, focuser, filter wheel, etc... will be blocking some of your light path.
Also the wires tied to the spider vanes will increase the size of your diffraction spikes.
Mounts: EQ1, LXD55, Atlas EQ-G (one with Rowan belt mod, EQ6-Rail and one without)

Hi, the CCD camera and the coma corrector/fieldflattener have a lower profile/footprint than the secondary mirror, the ribbon cable is also no thicker than a very thin spyder vane, that the scope will be longer is also calculated for. In all I am hoping to get better image quality and a less sensitive setup in terms of collimation. Since I am building the telescope truss from scratch with all the buffling necessary I am hoping for the best.
