Once I have calibrated it I can put a star perfectly in the middle of the view of a 13mm eyepiece by just standing next to the scope. But this is something you should only use when viewing alone. I have found a mount for a pointer by Orion and considering to put it on my Dobson.
I use a laser on my big Dob and I really like how fast I can align my scope. Like Piet I can put a star in the field of view using a 9 mm eyepiece and then fine tune it with the RACI. It’s great when you want to know exactly where you are in the sky or show someone else what you are looking at. I think flocking will be next.785C599C-BFC5-41DD-A2C1-6A275FEBFBED.jpeg

You are most welcome. Don't even get me started on the wonders of Velcro (Hook and Loop). It adheres my power pack and dew controller to the other side.

There are 'hook' strips along the top edges of the base and 'loop' strips on things like pencils, red lights, and my red led timepiece. There's a place for everything and everything has its place.

Mine has been upgraded many times. A RACI and a Telrad were probably the most bang for the buck. After that, manual setting circles really helped in my light polluted skies. I added a Lacerta 1:10 focuser upgrade which turned my single speed crayford into a dual speed for fine focus adjusting. My last, most favorite, but most expensive upgrade was adding a goto base.

That allowed me to do video astronomy with my dob: https://www.astrobin.com/users/Robrj/collections/173/

Oh boy. This is a hot topic for me.

    1. Bobs Knobs for the secondary.
    2. Moonlite dual speed focuser - $$ but a mammoth upgrade. I do a lot of cold weather observing, and the stock Crayford focuser (Synta) wasn't cutting it. The Moonlite is flawless in extremely cold conditions.
    3. Telrad - my most used mod - using an elevated 4" mount for this item.
    4. RACI moved over to plunk the Telrad between it and the focuser.
    5. Improvements to the Azimuth base with new Teflon pads and opposing bearing material.

    To do:

Reduce diffraction spikes with a curved vane three point or two point secondary mount.

    I'll flog the flock.

When I ordered my A10, they offered a "tweeker's dream" package and I added it to my order. It included stronger springs on the primary, thumb screws for the primary and secondary, setting circle and digital altitude gauge and flocking.

When I bought the ES 16 last year it came with nice colimation screws so all I added was a shroud and I made a setting circle. Instead of the cheap red dot finder, I use my 50mm RAF scope. Oh, and I also use the altitude gaude I already had.

Without a doubt for me, a coma corrector, even at F5. Stars are almost refractor like, very nice pinpoints. I own refractors, love refractors, will buy another one or two but the coma corrector was a game changer for me as far as my gear needs.

I think the best upgrade for me is the replacement of teflon pads. The movement is now smooth and extremely precise. The downside is that the telescope has to be level so it doesn´t turn on its own and the wind also poses a problem.
