I have never seen a truly bad customer service report for Orion. They seem to be very responsive to customers, even selling replacement parts like encoder disks, if you need one.

Orion is probably the best and most reliable telescope company on the market. Their expensive, but your stuff will come in excellent condition and their customer service is very friendly and will always answer your questions, even about what accessories and eye pieces to buy.

Want another good company, telescopes.com, now part of hayneedle.com. I've ordered from them as well as they have an excellent assortment of filters for very, VERY reasonable prices. I've gotten some good filter assortments for under $100 bucks and they work fine for me. Ship fast and products come in excellent condition as well.
Companies for most things on the web are usually shady. Telescopes is actually not one of them. Most telescope places out there are very reasonable and are good companies. There is a third company I have an eyepiece from as well, the eyepiece itself is kind of cheap and crappy but the place shipped it in top condition and fast.

I figured id chime in since ive dealt with them several times in the past & just today.
Ive always been treated 1st class by Orion & still was. I just received my Orion ED 80, a used scope I purchased from Astromart & while it was in almost mint condition ....almost......the focuser wheels rubber had came loose & was degrading a tad.
After looking over their website I was concerned id have to buy an entirely new style crawford to replace this one since I didn't see the correct replacement wheels, IF I wanted the wheels to look new, otherwise I could use O rings relunctly to cover them up a few layed side by side.
Figured what the heck id call tech support just to see what they might offer...............
The tech man said there was a spare there & he would send me a new focuser bar & the wheels! This turn of events really has me happy!
I can't say enough good about them really. The replacement parts prices was so low it was almost free. And shipping was free as well................ just amazing helpful service.

    A caveat to the above?

It is my understanding that the service is quite good if you buy directly from Orion but not so outstanding if you purchase from someone other than Orion.

In the past month or so I have bought a complete setup from them. They were extremely patient and helpful, on the phone, and in email. They answered a load of questions before I purchased anything, while I was purchasing things, and even after I purchased everything. I still send them questions in email or call them occasionally and they don't ask if I own their equipment or who I am, they just answer my questions.

When I first got my scopes (one main, one guide) they sent the wrong screws for the dovetail mount to the main scope rings. I called and told them my order had the wrong screws (did not mention my name, order number, nothing), he offered to send me the correct screws and told me what size they were, I declined and said I would just run to Home Depot and get two and be done with it. We hung up and I left for the store.

When I got back the screws did not fit, they were the wrong size. I was a little upset and went to get the phone. Then I noticed there was a message so I played it. It was the guy from Orion who had looked up the order by seeing who had ordered that combination of scopes that would have just been delivered (they don't have caller ID?!?!) and called me back full of apologies giving me the corrected screw sizes saying he really hoped I had not already gone to the store. Yeah, he made a mistake, but he went way way way out of his way to try to make it right, and to me that is what counts the most.

I would say their customer support is excellent, better than almost any company I have ever dealt with. I am so happy with it (and their policy of price matching anything they sell if they lower the price on something you bought up to thirty days, which I received a $100 credit for!) that I will continue to do as much business with them as possible.

Since we're all sharing, and since I haven't posted in a few days.

I have three Orion telescopes. The first was bought almost ten years ago. The phone service then was excellent, and still is. The second I bought in their showroom and the salesperson was very helpful, and it appeared that he was also doing phone service as well. It's interesting to note that the live service, and phone service are the same people. Then again that may have just been sales. Most recently I tried their live chat...

I like the thought of being able to quickly connect with a live person via chat and ask a quick question, but for more detailed questions it really isn't worth the time. I wanted some information on replacement parts for my refractor, and it actually took longer than if I were to call them up.

Overall I still like the products and the service, and would continue giving them my money when I really ought to be saving it.

I was going to buy the 8" Dobsonian from Orion and I called C.S. They were set up so you could hear people talking in the background and telephones ringing. While making my order, I learned the shipping was going to be extra, although at the top of the web page it said "Free Shipping on orders > $250.00". In the fine print in the details section it showed the scope I wanted was exempted from the free shipping. The representative was unwilling to waive shipping costs. I hung up and ordered a bigger telescope from Opticsmart.com (free shipping). That was my one and only experience with Orion.

Sorry about your experience with Orion. So far I've been happy with every purchase and encounter.

    We'll see about the future.
