    Default Orion Atlas EQ-G V3.35 Firmware - Polar Alignment

    I got out for the first time in almost a year, last Saturday.
    I spent a couple of hours with the drift alignment, all the time wishing that the V3.34 firmware didn't have issues with the polar alignment utility.
    I've since installed the V3.35 firmware and was wondering if anybody has used the polar alignment utility successfully with this version firmware?
    I'm hoping that I can get out with the scope again before school starts back up in late September and would like to know if I should even bother with the polar alignment utility.
    It would be great if the utility works, especially with winter coming. I could get off work, setup, get a couple hours of shots, and be in bed before midnight.

    I haven't used the feature in the Orion software for some time. This is what I did that works great and after some practice and a 3 star alignment my tracking and slewing works good to great depending on on fast I setup:
    1. I took the time to level my tripod/mount in respect to Polaris on the polar scope circle.
    2. I learn the clock face method of where Polaris would be in repsect to the time of day and time of year using this program as a helping guide.
    3. I took the time to relevel my tripod/mount in respect to Polaris on the polar scope circle.
    4. I follow the procedures in the manual to do a 3 star alignment correcly.
    5. I take more time to level my tripod/mount in respect to Polaris on the polar scope circle.
    6. I can setup up my tripod/mount nice and level at my usual location and quickly find polaris place with the help of the suggested program or the time stated on the orion keypad. Things work great. Free Polar Alignment Software Download Polar FinderScope by Dr. Dale Jason Version 2.04
    Okay this works for the same location but for other varying locations I just adjust the one tripod leg for the evening since I would rather the general setup work for my usual spot.
    hope this helps

    Why? That's what I always ask when people spend a lot of time on polar alignment. Assuming you have a polar scope, determine where polaris should be on the circle and put it there and you're done. There are quite a few apps for ios and android that can show you this.

    I spend about a minute on polar alignment and that is good enough for me to take 30 minute (guided) exposures at 1368 and 600mm. Now if you're not guiding, that would be a different story and at that point you have to decide if it is worth spending so much time and throwing away so many images without it or do you just buy your way out of the issue with an auto-guiding setup.

    @Christo
    Thanks. I normally start out with the polar alignment scope, so I can get close, then do the drift alignment. That utility looks pretty good for double checking Polaris' position. I've been using the Synscan hand controller clock position of Polaris, which comes up during power-up, to double check the position of Polaris in the polar scope.

    @dcrowson
    The PE on this mount is worse than average. The better I can polar align it the less the guiding system has to do a Dec correction and the rounder my stars look.

    What is the life expectancy for a mount? Even though I've had this one for over 4 years, I'm ready to upgrade.

    Sorry about the double post above, the network at work is pretty poor.
    I didn't mention it but the reason I want to keep guiding from making Dec corrections is that when I did a hyper tune on my mount a couple of years ago, the chassis threads came out with one of my 4 Dec axis bolts so I only have 3 working Dec axis bolts.

    Nobody with the 3.35 firmware gets a high degree of accuracy with the polar align utility?

    The first time I tried the polar alignment feature I had this happen.
    I took the repaired mount out for a test drive this past Saturday, with intention of continuing my test of the updated polar alignment feature of the Synscan hand controller. I was able to consistently get single digits of error for the altitude but the azimuth stayed in the double digits, even after 2 cycles of 3-star alignment/polar alignment. After the third cycle I tested the azimuth alignment with a drift alignment and adjusted the mount accordingly. I ended up with a 3 minute error on altitude and a 2 minute error on azimuth.
    With school starting back up today, I'm hoping that I can get some more time with the telescope while Orion is in my viewable portion of the sky.
