    Hi All,

I have a wonderful fix for rack and pinion focusers, it involves only one unaddressed area of the focuser but, it's a goody!
I'm on a twelve hour seven day work week for 14 days straight and will have time to post/put up pics of the fix this weekend.
The fix involves the rack at the tube...

I have the same scope love it, However i took a different route and put a dual speed 2"/1.25" dual speed Crayford focuser on it. Work out really well.

I too love my ST80 - so much so that I treated it to one of the Crayfords from ScopeStuff. The only problem is that using that focuser spoils you when not using one.

I rescued one of the Chinese rack and pinion focusers and did exactly what you did with two exceptions. I used WD40 to degrease the garbage. The stuff actually works very well. I used white lithium grease because it was handy having used it on other projects. One small tub of it from the auto supply will last a lifetime. I think now you can now find it preloaded into a small syringe which makes getting just a bit easier.

    Thanks for the good info.
    Clear skies....Pete

Hi, I'm a newbie on the site. Just gettin back into the hobby, after a long sabbatical. Bought a Celestron 8. I am going to use an ST80 for a guide scope. Found this old post. And sure enough the ST80 had so much slop in the draw tube. I was almost embarrassed. I'm going to do the clean and grease too. Did the flocking some years back. Great article! One question. How did you remove the tube baffle? Seems pretty well welded to me. Clear Skies!!

The member never did post how the baffles were removed. I have not removed them in my scope. Given the quality of the ST80, who ever designed it knew what he was doing. I figure that there is a good reason for having them where they are or the designer would not have used them.
