Default autoguider for Orion 180mm Mak

    Hi,
I just joined the forum today. Has anyone got any ideas how to piggyback a guidescope to the Orion 180mm Mak? I'm not really interested in an off-axis guidance system. That is what they keep telling me to use at Orion. I want to also be able to guide a DSLR camera with various long lenses, 200mm - 600mm. I have looked on the Losmandy site, but they don't specify anything fitting the 180mm Mak. I am curous to see what other members have come up with.

    Thanks,
    Bill Welch

Maybe you can find a dual dovetail saddle that will allow the Mak or DSLR and the guidescope to sid side-by-side?

You could get rings for your mak and a dovetail mount. With this combo you will also need rings for your guidescope. Try this:

144mm ID Orion Telescope Tube Rings
Orion Guide Scope Ring Mounting Bar

    both are available at telescope.com

Thanks for all the welcomes! I think this forum will be fun and educational! Some more background; my wife and I are primarily nature and wildlife photographers and we are just recently taking an interest in astrophotography. We have several Canon DLSR camera bodies and lenses from 15mm to 600mm. We just recently bought the Orion 180mm Mak setup, so we have a lot to learn about astronomy and astrophotography. We were hoping to make a lot of use from our Canon lenses. I am sending one of our Canon 40D DLSR bodies in to be modified for astrophotography.

I have looked for scope rings to fit the 180mm Mak, but the OD is something like 217mm and no one seems to make something that size. I may end up going with the dual dovetail mounts with a separate guiding telescope when using our long camera lenses, and get an off-axis guider for the Mak. I read just last night that an off-axis guider works better with telescopes that focuse with mirrors. Too bad I can't kill two birds with one stone.
