I absolutely was upset by this, I hate when God's houses of worship are destroyed. The French are great people! I pray for them all.

The framework of Notre-Dame was made of around 1500 oak beams, with 500 years drying, so a fire is the worst thing to happen.
Notre-Dame is a part of French history, as a religious monument, and an architectural one, too, and a symbol for many people.

Like Mary has written, it is heartbreaking.

Notre-Dame de Paris on the Île de la Cité is the heritage of the western mediavel culture, a place where we are sharing feelings with the French.

    Thank you for the comments,

I was reading today that replacing the roof timbers will be a problem. France no longer has old-growth trees of the necessary size. Timbers will have to be imported from old-growth forests somewhere else in the world.

I read the same today and it have stirred so many mixed feelings:

It is a sad reminder of the primeval forests once stood in Europe.

Awe of the the roof construction which lasted for 800 years. Our home owners association forces us to replace roofs every 15 years. Our complains and references to centuries old roofs in Europe met with 'don't bring your immigrant crap in here attitude'.

Desire for the cathedral to be rebuilt in the historically relevant way. Realization that old threes in prime forest somewhere have to die for this.

News is the pipe organ and most major interior items are in tact. New better beams can be made as glue lams. The Rose stained glass at the end was destroyed but I have not heard about the rest. I am hoping for the best.

On the news, it was mentioned that it took 56 acres of forest to build the roof. Bill

I saw a fascinating documentary on the History Channel about the construction of Notre Dame and a few other cathedrals in Europe. They were innovative in being able to cut and lift giant beams into place using nothing but hand tools and wooden cranes available at the time. I wonder if there will be an effort to replicate the original beams of oak or whether some newfangled materials will be used, e.g. steel or laminate. With donations totaling 700 million euros so far financing should not be much of a problem.

My understanding is that the roof is above the stone vaulted ceiling and covered from the outside as well so you can't even see those oak timbers. So why sacrifice old growth oaks, let them use whatever works best.
