    Default Last round coming up

Heading in in a few hours for my last round of chemo. Was diagnosed with Acute promyelocytic leukemia at the end of last July. Was feeling really tired and thought I had pneumonia again. Doctor sent me to emerge and after a few tests I was whisked (yes whisked) away by ambulance and plane to VGH as my immune system was shot. No going home to get a change of clothes, no going out to the car to get anything, no collecting $200. I spent 5 weeks in hospital followed by 8 months of out patient treatment. Some interesting side effects along the way. Had dry heaves for the first time in over 30 years, They are not as much fun as i remembered

Treatment was just over 100 doses of Arsenic Trioxide and ATRA. ( I can imagine that discussion in the lab "hey we haven't tried arsenic yet, whattya think?".) To administer the doses I have a Hickman line embedded in my upper chest which gets pulled today. Looking forward to that.Showering has been a real pain I can tell you as the line has to be covered in plastic and taped up to keep it dry. Might just have one of those tank draining showers later.

They tell me that 40 or so years ago this type of leukemia gave you a few weeks, maybe months to live. Now it has a very high success rate. Hooray for modern science! No essential oils or other nonsense for this guy.

If I have anything to say to all of you it is to go to the Doctor when you don't feel right. Yeah, looking at you buckaroo.

It has been a longish haul but they tell me its all over now. Still have to mask up, avoid crowds and keep Purell in business for another month in order to let my immune system get back up to full speed.

I now return to my regularly scheduled life.
